  • The Journey Begins

    Lewis and Clark start at the Missouri River on May 21st, 1804
  • Standoff with the Teton Siox

    Clark pulled out his sword, and Lewis turned the keelboats swivel gun on the Siox, but at the last moment they both stood down.
  • Into Grizzly country

    The Indians had warned them about these powerful creatures. Some of Lewis's men spotted a pair of grizzlies, they wounded one, but the other charged Lewis and chased him for 80 yards
  • Rockies in Sight

    In May the expedition almost lost one of its two pirogues because a gust of wind caught the sails and made the boat fall over onits side. All of the journals and documents would have been lost if it wasn't for sacagewea when she reached in and retrieved as much as she could.
  • Toward the Continental Divide

    They had to get horses in order to continue, so they had to find the shoshone tribe
  • Among the Shoshone

    They had to bargain with the chief for horses
  • Deadly Crossing: The Bitteroots

    They meet some indians that gave them horses and they began their journey over the bitteroot mountains.
  • Ocean In View

    They finally see the ocean
  • Winter on the Pacific

    Lewis and Clark decided to make a camp south of the columbia. The whole stay was gloomy, and tedious work.
  • Readying for the Return

    Everyone on the expedition was ready to go home. But they had to wait for just the right time, so the snow was melted off the mountains.
  • Abandoning the Boats

    There was a strong current the men had to battle, and the chinookan indians kept attempting to steal their supplies. They abandoned the canoes and went on on horses.
  • Hailed as Heroes

    They began to make 80 miles a day. They made it back to St. Louis and everyone was there embracing them, and setting off gunshots in salute to the men.
