Apr 15, 1452

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th, 1452 in Anachiano, near Vinci Tuscany. His parents were Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci and Caterina da Vinci. Leonardo grew up to be one of the best known artists, he also was skilled in the areas of architecture, science, music, anatomy, literature, astronomy, history and many more areas. He contributed to the Renaissance Era and soon earned the nickname as the 'Renaissance Man'. Source: (Clayton 7)

May 21, 1456

Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Africa, near the city of Dakar were discovered in 1496. They were found by Alivse da Cadamosto who was, at the time, in the service of Henry the Navigator. The islands were taken by the Portuguese, where they were used for the slave trade. Source: (Trager 189)

Jan 18, 1467

Leonardo became an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio, in Florence, Italy. At a young age his father recognized Leonardo's talents as an avid artist. So he was taken to one of the most respected workshops in Florence. This is where some of his earliest works were created. Source: (Clayton 12)

Nov 23, 1467

The Ōnin War was a Japanese civil war that lasted close to 11 years. It was a small dispute between two factions that escalated into a nationwide war involving a number of regions in Japan. It had nearly destroyed both factions, it was a long, drawn-out struggle for domination, resulting in a mass power-struggle to dominate the whole of Japan. Source: (Trager 152)

Jan 18, 1472

Scotland acquires the Orkney Islands from Norway. This gives Scotland more land area and the amount of land it has today. The archipelago of islands gained a lot of population. Source:(Trager 153)

Oct 12, 1476

Leonardo's apprenticeship ends at Verrocchio's studio. This gave him an extremely strong start and introduction to the art world. He gained great discipline and was an amazing pupil. Source: (Clayton 36)

Jan 18, 1480

In the 1480's Leonardo's interest in scientific studies started to grow. He began to assemble a small library filled with books. He studied areas such as light, color, perspective, optics, dynamics, and statistics. He made substantial discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, geology, optics, and hydrodynamics. Aug 10, 1481

Leonardo receives a commission to paint the Adoration of the Magi. This painting was never completed, like many others. Although it was, and still is considered a masterpiece. Source: (Amey 119)

Apr 2, 1489

Leonardo begins to study anatomy. While studying he created dozens of groundbreaking anatomical sketches. He created scientific masterpieces that gave people insight into the functioning of the human body. He became obsessed with understanding the structure of the heart. Source: (Romei 79)

Oct 12, 1492

In October 1492 Christopher Columbus made the accidental discovery of the 'New World', or America. Although Natives have lived there for several years he is credited to the discovery of America. He also helped Europeans immigrate to the 'New World' and settle there. Source: (Trager 166)

Jan 18, 1495

In 1495 Leonardo began to paint what will become one of the most famous pieces of art in the world. 'The Last Supper' was commissioned to him and took about a year to create. It is arguably the most important paintings to ever be created. Source:(Romei 88)

May 27, 1505

In 1505 Leonardo begins his second attempt to make a 'flying machine'. He also starts his first sketches of 'Mona Lisa'. He finishes his sketches a short time after and soon creates the famous painting seen everywhere. Source:(McLanathan 51)

Event #14

Jul 26, 1507

In 1507 Leonardo is appointed Louis XII's painter and engineer. This is one of the last positions or jobs he holds before his death. He spends his last years there until he permanently moves to France in 1516. Source: (McLanathan 92)

Feb 2, 1509

During the spice trade the Portuguese attempted at establishing their predominance over the trade. They did this by defeating a Muslim fleet at the Battle of Diu. This battle took place on Febuary 2nd 1509 in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Source: (Trager 201)

May 2, 1519

May 2nd 1519 Leonardo da Vinci passed away at age 67. He is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals to ever have lived. He contributed to many different areas and is still a huge historical figure in the world today. Source: (Clayton 7)
