This is the time span of Le Mans. It has ran each year since 1923, excpet for French strikes in1936, world war 2 and the petrolem shortage of 1973-74.

These first races were diffrent from todays Le Mans in that the winner was declared after three years of racing. The races were 24 hours long and the distnace traveld was added up after 3 years or 3 races, and then the winnner was declared.

After 2 serries of racing with the 3 years rule the directors of the race decided to change the ruling to what is used 2day.

After world war 2 the raceing series went back to racing like before, but with more intrest from bigger companies.

The worlds sportscar championship was created in 1953 and was a factory competion to find the best sportscar in the world.

After the 1955 crash of driver Pierre Levegh saftey was reviewed and many companies changed from open toped cars to hard roofs.

In 1960 the Cheverolet Corvettes won there catogory in the race for the first time. This began the period of american interst in the race.

The Rules were once again changed to incorprate the fimilar rolling start of todays Le Mans

This car brought Porsche to the podium in both 1970 and 1971.

in 1972 the Matra company won the Le Mans race, the first time a french company had sense 1950.

Privateers John Wyer won the 1975 Le Mans race with his Mirage race car.

During the first part of the 1980's Porsche domintated Le Mans.

The french driver and car desinger Jean Rondeau won the 1980 Le Mans race with his self tittled car.

The new racing class group c is created. The cars in this catagorie are fuel efficent by racing standerds and are slightly modified sportscars.

The course changed in 1990 to become what it is seen today. This is that the Musalene straight now has two chicans, this change was to lower down speed in excesive of 250 miles per hour

During this time period companies put together cars that were designed for le mans and sold as production cars. This was to get around the loophole on prodution based car teams.
