Language Development Timeline

  • Birth - 3 months

    Newborns are learning how to identify their caregiver's voices and faces.
  • 3 months - 4 months

    Infants are learning to respond to sounds that are received from the caregiver which in turn creates a stimulus response sequence.
  • 4 months - 6 months

    Can coo and babble, cries when distressed, enjoys rhymes and music that is followed through with actions.
  • 6 months - 9 months

    Infants ar now getting to the point where they are learning how to interact with gestures.
  • 9 months - 11 months

    can begin to imitate words and understand the simple words such as bye,bye.
  • 1 year (12 months)

    are able to put consonants together to make more repetitive sounds, uses sounds to ask for things, and knows how to play games like peek-a-boo and respond to simple commands such as "come here".
  • 2 years (24 months)

    They are quickly learning new words and more questions are being asked starting with WHAT and WHY
  • 3 years ( 36 months)

    Strangers begin to understand what the child is saying. they can pronounce words and use them correctly. Talking to themselves during play surfaces. they even can imitate adults when they talk.
  • 4 - 5 years old

    At four years of age the vocabulary is more extensive causing more complex sentences. Can use language to talk,share,etc. At age five vocabulary because even wider and starts to include shapes,colors,etc. They can even offer opinions in conversations
  • 6 - 8 years

    At age six can understand 13,000 words including opposites and using pronouncination properly.
    At age seven can understand anywhere from 20,000-26,000 words. Is also aware of mistakes that people make in their speech.
    At age eight they are able to read age appropriate texts with ease. Have fewer lapses in grammar and hold conversations with adults.
