    Prenatal development to age 2 year

    During this timeframe children go from crying, to cooing and making vowel sounds. They observe their parents or caregivers intently while caregiver plays games such as peekaboo. Infants then begin babbling and repeating syllables. Babbling begins to sound like spoken language. Infants begin to understand words spoken. Infants participate in turn taking games and use gestures such as pointing. By 12 months toddler say first word. Words go from 50 to 200 to 250 and two word combinations begin.

    2-5 years (Preschool)

    Age 2-3 word usage about 150-400 words, uses 2-3 word phrases, can follow two step commands.There's rapid increase in comprehension. Age 3-4 child uses 600-1000 words, but understands 1500. Child recognizes gender differences, pronouns & adjectives are used as well as some adverbs. Child is also able to answer questions. 4-5 years uses 1000-1500 words understands about 2000. Uses 4-6 words sentences, Uses 3-4 syllable words. Follows more complex directions. Understands if, because, why & when.
  • Period: to

    6-12 years

    Understands why, where and when. Can use sentences with 6 words, vocabulary now has about 2000 words . Child can tell stories with and understanding of cause and effect. Can recognize words thru sight, also understands figurative language and multiple meanings of words. Uses future, past and present tenses. Can read, comprehend sentences and short stories or even paragraphs. Can alter language style to suit context (formal or informal)
