In 1750, Kunta Kinte was born in Gambia, West Africa. He lived in the Mandinka village of Juffure. He is the first son to Omora and Binta.

Kunta Kinte is captured and enslaved while searching for wood to make a drum. Four men followed him and enslaved him. He was placed on the Lord Ligonier for a 3 month journey.

He is sold to a man called John Waller who owns a plantation. He is renamed "Toby". He rejects the name and refuses to speak with the other slaves.

After being caught 4 times, Kunta Kinte is given the choice of either being castrated or having his foot amputated. He chooses the second option so the slave catchers cut off the front half of his right foot. He becomes more social but never forgets his past.

Kunta Kinte marries a fellow slave called Belle Waller. Together, they have a child named Kizzy (meaning "stay out"). When she got to her late teens, Kizzy is sold to the North Carolinas.

Kunta Kinte died in slavery at the age of 72. His grave said Toby but was later crossed out and replaced with "Kunta Kinte" by his daughter.
