    After World War II, Korea is divided into communist North Korea and anti-communist South Korea.

  • North Korea invades the South

    With permission from Russia, North Korea invades South Korea and continues on to the capital.
  • South Korean president kills 100,000

    Called the Summer of Terror, Syngman Rhee was worried that communism would overtake the South.
  • The US joins the Korean War

    Truman sends troops overseas to help South Korea
  • USA loses battle of Osan

    US thougt Osan would be an easy victory, yet they were defeated.
  • USA wins battle of Inchon

    General MacArthur leads an invasion into Inchon.
  • US troops reach Pyongyang

    United States troops reach the North Korean capital. People believe the war will end soon.
  • China joins the Korean War

    China joins the war as North Korean allies.
  • The UN launches the "Home By Christmas"

    General MacArthur orders force to move to the Yalu river along the Korean border. The general said the troops would "Be home by Christmas"
  • China and North Korea recapture Seoul

  • Peace Talks Begin

    Takes two years for anything to get done as the war drags on.
  • Douglas MacArthur is fired as General

    After General MacArthur publicly disagrees with President Truman about whether or not to bomb China, MacArthur is fired.
  • Truce talks begin at Kaesong

    The negotiations don't end the war, and the fighting remains for two more years
  • The Battle of Heartbreak Ridge begins

    American and French troops start a battle with North Korea and the Chinese. The US and France win the month-long fight.
  • Eisenhower is elected President

    Eisenhower is elected President and promises to end the war in Korea.
  • Agreement reached for repatriation of Prisoners of War

  • North and South Korea agree to truce

    Both countries agree to stop fighting. The countries are still divided and there is no fighting, but there is an area between the two countries called the "demilitarized zone"
  • Exchange of Prisoners of War

    A total of 82,493 Koreans and Chinese POWs are repatriated
  • Geneva talks fail to unite Korea

    US and Chinese representatives meet in Geneva to attempt to unite Korea, but it failed.
