Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Baba

    When the reader is first introduced to Baba they read that "no one ever doubted the veracity of any story about Baba." (page 12) The fact that no one would dare to ever doubt baba shows just how respected he is. In addition, it describes that he is a person great authority.
  • First Words

    At the end of chapter two of The Kite Runner Amir narrates, "And under the same roof, we spoke our first words. Mine was Baba. His was Amir. My name." (page 11) As a result of Amir saying Baba, due to the fact that Baba is the one responsible for him, Hassan says Amir believing that Amir is the who he attends to. Hassan belives this true, even though they are practically brothers.
  • Assef Introduction

    In chapter five of The Kite Runner, The reader is introduced to Assef and finds out that "Of all of the neighborhood boys who tortured Ali, assef was by far the most relentless." (page 38) With this being true, it proves how Assef is a ruthless and evil human being. It aslo shows how people of a lower socioeconomic status in Afghanistan, despite their age, are not respected at all.
  • Assef's Evilness

    Amir describes "I looked in his crazy eyes and saw that he meant it. He really meant to hurt me. Assef raised his fist and came for me." (page 41) Assef threatinig Amir like that shows how cruel he can really be. It also shows that he will aslo take cruel actions towards those who have an even higher socioeconomic status.
  • Hassan Becomes Raped By Assef

    In the alley, "Assef knelt behing Hassan, put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks. He kept one hand on Hassan's back and undid his own belt buckle with his free hand. He unzipped his jeans. Dropped his underwear. He positioned himself behind Hassan." (page 75) the fact that Assef would go this far to torcher Hassan shows that he is a huge sociopath. The evilness and burtality of this action is life changing for Hassan.
  • The Affect Of Hassan's Rape On Amir

    After witnessing the rape, Amir says, "I was weeping" (page 77). Due to the fact that Amir and Hassan are really close, witnessing this brings down Amir's emotions deeply. Also, it will mess with his head in a huge way.
  • Amir's Thoughts On Hassan

    After witnessing Hassan's getting raped Amir thinks to himself, "I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan-the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past-and accept whatever happen to me. Or I could run. In the end I ran." (page 77) Amir does not think he has to pay back Hassan by standing up for him, due to the fact that he believes Hassan should do that anyaways since he is of a lower socioeconomic status. In addition, he is not brave enough to stand up to Assef.
  • The After-Effects of The Rape On Amir

    Ali realizes that something is wrong with Hassan, after he occurence of the rape, and asks Amir what happened. Amir replies, "'Like I said, how should I know what's wrong with him?' I snapped. 'Maybe he's sick. People get sick all the time, Ali. Now, am I going to freeze to death or are you planning on lighting the stove today?'" (page 81) The rape is now making Amir act upset towards others. He is also believing it si okay to treat others with a lower socioeconomic status with dis respect.
  • Amir's Guilt

    As Amir pelting Hassan whit pomegranates, he narrates, "I wished he would. I wished he'd give me the punishment I craved, so maybe I'd finally sleep at night. Maybe then things could return to how they used to be between us. But Hassan did nothing as I pelted him again and again. 'You'e a coward!' I said. 'Nothing but a goddamn coward!'" (page 92) Amir is attempting to indirectly apologize for his sins. However, Hassan will not hit him back which causes Amir's guilt to make him filled with rage.
  • Hassan's Mental Power

    After Amir was done pelting him, "Then Hassan did pick up a pomegranate. He walked toward me. He opened it and crushed against his own forehead." (page 93) Hassan's ability to reamin calm and not hit Amir back shows the amount of mental toughness he has. In addition, fufilinf Amir's needs in the process gives a great amount power mentally.
  • Hasan's Loyalty

    When Hassan takes the blame for stealing th e watch and money then Amir realizes everything. He then narrates, "He knew I had betrayed him and yet he was rescuing me once more again, maybe for the last time." (page 105) Although Amir was not loyal and kind to Hassan, he still feels the nedd to treat Amir in the opposite manner. This is due to the level of their socioeconomic status.
  • Invasion

    Afghanistan became invaded when "the first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979, to assist Babrak Karmal, who had become president in a coup within thye Afghan Communist leadership." (page 2) The first sign of war in Afghanistan had now ocuurred. From now on, peace in Afghanistan will be unknown for a while.
  • Baba Dies

    After Baba falls asleep, "Baba never woke up." (page 173) Baba has died, and has left behing a legacy for Amir to fulfill. He will be remembered by many great things by others.
  • Amir Moves To California

    Amir narrates, "Shortly after Baba's death, Soraya and I moved into a one-bedroom apartment in Fremont" (page 180). Amir has nowed moved to California, and out of Afghanistan with Soraya. This will enable them to live a life without the terror of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • Baba Gives Advice

    During chapter eleven of The Kite Runner "Baba sighed. 'It may be junfair, but hwat happens in a few days sometimes even a single day can change the course of a lifetiem.'" (page 142) This is told to Amir so he can realize how affetcive a descion he is about to make can be on his life. In addition, the choices you make today, affect your whole life.
  • End of an Invasion

    After nine years of battle and war, "the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in Febuary 1989, in what was in effect a unilatteral withdrawl." (page 2) The troops form Russia have fled Afghanistan, and the invasion is now over. However, the terror in Aghanistan is just beginnig.
  • The Start of The Taliban

    The Taliban was created when "Mullah Omar, a Pashtun who had lost an eye fighting the Soviets, gathered a small band of men and attacked a group of warlords who had raped a girl and shaved her head." (page 2) The Taliban is now starting off, and horrible actions will be taken by those part of it. This will cahnaage Afgahanistan imensely.
  • The Creation of a Popular Movement

    The Taliban became a big part of Afghanistan when "Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east. With his promise of restoring the centrality of Islam to daily life, he created a genuinely popular movement in a country weary of corruption and brutality." (page 2) The Taliban is now officialy known threw out Afghanistan. It is also about to be a big part of Afghanistan's whole society.
  • A Supplier Is Made

    Pakistan assisted The Taliban when "Pakistan intelligence officers began funneling arms, money and supplies to Mullah Omar's men, as well as military advisers to help guide them in battle." (page 3) Without Pakistan suppling the Taliban, their movement could have been ended. As a result of this assistance, the Taliban remains strong and in control.
  • The Take Over

    In Afgahnstin "the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan, imposing stict enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing." (page 3) The taliban has brought many cruel actions to Afghamsitan that have now taken place. The whole Afghanistan is now under their control and is suffering due to their brutality.
  • The Terror In Pakistan

    As Amir returns to Pakistan he finds out that "The Alliance did more damage to Kabul than the Shoravi. They destroyed your father's orphanage, did you know that?'" (page 200) The Taliban have caused a lot of terribel events in Pakistan. They have destroyed many significant places and have taken control of it.
  • Military Involvemnt

    The U.S. and Afghanistan have gone to war before, and "The United States has been military involved in Afghanistan since 2001, when it led an invasion after the Sept. 11 attacks by Al Qaeda" (page 1). Afghanistan is now at war with the U.S. again, and is peace is to be postponed in the country for quite a while. This is due to the fact that they are continuosly causing problems for themselves.
  • Bin Laden Is Wanted By U.S.

    After Al Qaeda attacked the U.S., "President George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden." (page 3) Osama bin Laden is wanted by the U.S. because he had arranged a devastating attack towards The United States. Afghanistan's refusal of handing him over is the reason theey are about to go to war.
  • The End of The Taliban

    After 9/11 occured "the United States joined forces with rebel groups that had never accepted the Taliban rule, notably the Northern Alliance, which represented minority tribes. An air and ground campaign began that drove the Taliban out of the major Afghan citeis by the end of the year." (page 3) As reslut 9/11, the U.S. is trying to put an end to the Taliban's rain of terror. With the help of rebel groups their goal was achieved, and the brutality across Afghanistan is now over.
  • Military's Main Concern

    Afghanistan became the U.S. military's main concern when "President Obama made Afghanistan the central military force of his administration, drawing troops out of Iraq and increasing the number in Afghanistan by almost 50,000." (page 1) Afghanistan now encounters another problem and more disturbance. The U.S. troops are now an overwhelm ing amount for Afghanistan.
