  • Baba was born

    In the book it said, "In 1933, the year Baba was born and year Zahir Shah began his forty-year reign of Aftghanistan, two brothers, young men from a wealthy and reputable family in Kabul, got behind the wheel of their father's Ford roadster" (pg. 24) Amir is explaining when his father was born and who had control then. He tries to connect the tragic incident with the two young men and his father.
  • Hassan was born

    Amir said, "It was there, in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964, just one year after my mother died giving birth to me." (pg. 6) This quote explains the event of Hassan being born. It includes the year and the season of this event. Amir also linked it back to how his mother died giving birth to him.
  • Baba built an orphanage

    In the book it said, "In the late 1960's, when I was five or six, Baba decided to build an orphanage." (pg.13) This peice of evidence talks about the first time Baba decided to build one. The author wrote when it was and how old Amir was. Showing his dedication towards others and his family.
  • Hassans' surgery

    Baba said, "Hassan, meet your birthday present. Well, Dr Kumar said, my job is to fix things on people's bodies. Sometimes their faces." (pg. 44-45) In this birthday present from Baba, he is giving Hassan surgery to fix his upper lip. Providing the idea that Baba cares about Hassan a lot.
  • Hassan is attacked

    Amir said that, "Assef motioned with his hand, and the other two boys separate, forming a half circle, trapping Hassan in the alley. Assef said I'll let you keep it so it will always remind you of what I'm about to do." (pg. 73) This is the day that Hassan is violated by Assef. He will never be the same, and this is what splits their friendship apart.
  • Amir wins the kite competition

    In the book Amir said, "I was throwing my free arm around Hassan and we were hopping up and down, both of us laughing, both of us weeping. You won, Amir agha! You won! WE won! WE won! Was all I could say." (pg. 66) This event was a very important day for Amir because it would be the day that he earns respect from his father for winning the competition. It is also the last day that Hassan ever flies a kite.
  • Amir lets his anger out on Hassan

    Amir said, "Hit me back! I snapped. I hit him with another pomegranate, in the shoulder this time. The juice splattered his face. Hit me back! I spat. Hit me back, goddamn you!" (pg. 92) This was a very importante scene where Amir tries to feel better if Hassan hit him back. This way he could feel relief after the incident where Hassan was violated. A way to feel closure.
  • Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan

    In the article they wrote that, "it is now the scene of what has become the central military struggle for the United States." (New York Times, pg. 1)
  • Russian Tanks arrive

    Amir said, "In December 1979, when Russian tanks would roll into the very same streets where Hassan and I played, bringing the death of the Aftghanistan I knew and marking thes start of a still ongoing era of bloodletting." (pg. 36) Amir brings up the event of the tanks arriving in the very same spot where Hassan and him would play. How life in Aftghanistan has changed and it isn't as safe as it used to be.
  • First Soviet Troops Parachute into Kabul

    They parachuted into Kabul so they could, "assist Babrak Karmel, who had become president in a coup within the Afghan Communist leadership." (New York Times, pg. 2)
  • Arriving in America

    It said in the book that, "Baba loved the idea of America. It was living in America that gave him an ulcer." (pg. 125) This is when the two of them arrived in America after leaving Aftghanistan. Once they arrrived here they started over with dreams and hopes.
  • Amir graduates from High school

    Amir says, "That summer of 1983, I graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day." (pg. 131) This was a very special day because it showed his father that he succeeded and is finally becoming a young man. Baba was so proud of him that day for being able to graduate in America.
  • Baba gets his first seizure after finding out he has cancer

    Amir explains that, "I turned around and found Baba on the ground. His arms and legs were jerking. He was frothing at the mouth, the foamy spittle soaking his beard. People were rushing to us. I heard someone say seizure." (pg.158) This is the first time Baba gets a seizure. He also finds out he has cancer. This is what gave Amir a push to marry Soraya.
  • Last Soviet troops left Afghanistan

    In the article it said that, "eventually, after peace talks moderated by the United Nations, the last soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989." (New York Times, pg 2)
  • Amir publishes his first book

    In the book it said that, "The novel was released in the summer of that following year, 1989, and the publisher sent me on a five-city book tour." (pg. 183) This is his first ever published book. His career is working out for him and Soraya is very proud of him.
  • Power was anarchically divided

    Aftghanistan had, "descended into vicious internecine strife; by the summer of 1994, power was anarachically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." (New York Times pg. 2)
  • Taliban had taken control of Afghanistan

    They did this by, "Imposing strict enforcement of fundamentalist Islamic law, banning movies and music and forcing women out of schools and into all-enveloping burqa clothing." (New York Times pg. 3)
  • Hassan dies

    Rahim says, "A few weeks later, the Taliban banned kite fighting. And two years later, in 1998, they massacred the Hazaras in Mazar-i-Sharif......Hassan protested again.... and shot him in the back of the head." (pg. 213 and 219) This is the first time Amir has heard from Hassan. This is also the reason why Amir heads back to save Hassan's son.
  • Amir and Hassan arrive in America

    Amir explains that, "We arrived home about seven months ago, on a warm day in August 2001. Soraya picked us up at the airport." (pg. 357) The two of them finally make it home, back in America. They are free and safe from the people in Aftghanistan. It marks that day they became a family after adopting him.
  • United States joined forces with rebel groups

    These rebel groups, "had never accepted Taliban rule, notably the Northern Alliance, which represented minority tribes." (New York Times, pg. 3) This all happened after the attack on the world trade center in New York.
  • The group that led an invasion after the attack were given safe haven

    The invasion was led by Al Qaeda and had been given safe haven by the, "Taliban, the extremist Islamic group that had seized control in 1996 after years of civil war." (New York Times, pg. 1)
  • Hassan smiles again

    Amir says to Hassan, "Do you want me to run that kite for you? His Adam's apple rose and fell as he swallowed. The wind lifted his hair. I thought I saw him nod. It was only a smile, nothing more." (pg. 371) This is the day Hassan talks for the first time in over a year after arriving in America. Hassan is finally feeling comfortable with his new family ever since his incident.
  • Hamid Karzai took office as interim president

    His goal was to, "secure peace for Afghanistan and win the country much-needed international aid." (New York Times, pg. 3)
  • General Petraeus took charge of U.S. Central Command

    He was the Iraq commander and had, "received much credit for the success of the surge there." (New York Times, pg. 4)
  • Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops

    Obama said that he, "vowed to start bringing American forces home from Afghanistan in the middle of 2011." (New York Times, pg, 4)
