Richard was born on 8th September 1157 in Oxford. He was the third son of Henry II. His mother was Eleanor of Aquitaine.

He twice rebelled against his father.
He possessed considerable political and military ability. -
He became King of England in 1189. He appointed William Longchamp as Chancellor of England during his absence abroad.

As king, Richard's chief ambition was to join the Third Crusade.

William Longchamp was overthrown by Richard’s brother, John.
He reached Cyprus where he married Berengaria, daughter of the king of Navarre, on 12th May. -
On his way back to England from Palestine, Richard was captured and handed over to Henry VI, Emperor of Germany.

In February 1194, Richard was released from captivity.

He returned at once to England and was crowned for a second time. Yet a month later he went to Normandy, never to return

His last four years were spent in intermittent warfare against Philip II.

He died on 6th April. He was succeeded by his younger brother John.
