    The Khmer Empire was banded together by Jayavarman the second and official established in the area of Angkor during 889.

    The Splitting of the empire

    King Jayavarman IV split the kingdom and established a new kingdom at Koh Ker called Lingapura. He built a series of temples and took over many nearby monasteries.

    Angkor Thom was built by king Jayavarman VII and is another large temple found in the area thought to have been inhabited by the Khmers. It went from 1181-1216. In Khmer it means "the great city'.

    Zhou Da Guan was a chinese diplomat who came to visit the Khmers. Many suspected he was a spy but he was allowed entry. He recorded much of the important information that we now have about the khmers today. For example, we know that they had been in many wars and that they had been very good farmers. He left at around July 1297.

    It is hard to exactly show how the Khmer empire declined, however, common reasons for decline were overextension of the empire, change of religion, lack of trade with other countries and argument over who was the legitimate ruler (there were around 27 kings 11 of which were probably not eligible)

    Angkor Wat is generally regarded to have been abandoned at around 1431 as it was getting repeatedly attacke and was unsustainable. Many regard this time as the end of the Angkorians. They reestablished themselves in Phnom Penh, the current capital.
