Afghanistan was first a monarchy ruled by King Zahir Shah. One day when the King was on vacation, Mohammad Daoud Khan seized power. He was Zahir’s cousin and a former prime minister of Afghanistan. The military overthrowing was nearly bloodless, but as we can see throw Amir’s story. It was still a scary time for the people of Kabul who heard the rioting and shooting. -
Dauod is killed
After establishing a Republic of Afghanistan with Daoud as president and prime minister; Rival leaders and civilians staged a second a revolt and Daoud was killed. This revival received much finance and military aid from the Soviet Union. They took control of the government and established political policies supporting communism. -

The Soviet Withdrew
The Soviet finally withdrew, there was a great deal of fighting among rival militias, making like in Afghanistan unsafe. In the Kite Runner, Rahim Khan describes the fear in Kabul during this time. He remembers “the infighting between the factions was fierce and no one knew if they would live to see the end of the day” -
Taliban takes control of Kabul
The Taliban took control of Kabul. After so many years of insecurity and violence, the people welcomed the taleover. In Rahim Khan remembers "we all celebrated in 1996 when the Taliban rolled in and put an end to the daily fighting.The Taliban were a group of Pashtun who banned together and took control of the country. After the 9/11 bombing, The United States led coalition begin attacks on Taliban controlled Afghanistan with an intense bombing campaign by American and British Forces. United States invaded Afghanistan and overthrew the Taliban. The end of The Kite Runner occur in 2002 with a provisional government. -
Meaning of the Kite Runner
The meaning of the title Kite Runner; Kite flying represents freedom and innocence. This motif can be seen right through the book until the end when events come full circle. Kite flying holds both the painful meaning of Hassan’s rape and the healing feeling of Amir teaching the young Sohrab in America.
