The original term for Punk was to describe a trouble maker, usually of antisocial behaviour and was a movement vastly seen in the 1970’s and 1980’s. In today’s society (which is far more accepting), punk is viewed as an alternate lifestyle, stereotypically linked with rebellious behaviour.

The term Cybernetics is a study of communication, command and control in living organisms, machines and organisations -
introduced by Norbert Wiener. Cybernetics became linked to the computer world in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the word originates from the Greek language. -
The Punk band, the Ramones release their first album and PUNK is now classed as a genre of music.

Cyberspace, also known as the place that hosts the world wide web, websites, programs, games, email addresses and more was introduced for world wide communication. It is the collective imagination of internet users and is a communication between people and computers.
Also released this year was Neuromancer - William Gibson's debut novel, quickly labelled cult-like after being one of the first Cyberpunk books on the market, -
The Electronic Frontier Foundation was founded - defending rights in the digital world. This assisted with safety and privacy in the cyber world. View more about EFF here.

Cyberpunk was featured as the cover story of Time Magazine in February. This introduced even more of society to the genre and pleased Cyberpunk fans. Cyberpunk is "a combination of high tech and low life" (The Cyberpunk Project 2004). It is loud, fast sci-fi genre, set in the near future that uses gritty aesthetics and high technology.
