Key Events of the Holocaust

  • Hitler gets elected as Chancellor of Germany

The past four years have been turbulent economically for Germany. Hitler promises to create more jobs for the public. He publicly blames communists, democratic politicians and his critics and gains power.
  • Hitler sets fire to the Reichstag building

The Nazis set fire to the parliament of Germany in an event known as the Reichstag fire, and blames it on communists and minority groups, using this as an excuse to get emergency powers for himself and the Nazi party.
  • The Dachau concentration camp opens

As the first of 40,000 concentration camps yet to open, the Dachau concentration camp processes thousands of Hitler's political opponents who were blamed for the Reichstag fire. The public approve of this decision, apparently seeing it as a sensible security precaution.
  • Nuremburg Race Laws are passed

These laws now deprive Jews of their citizenship status, but instead receiving the status of "subjects" in Hitler's Reich, and this removes their right to have professional occupations such as teachers, accountants or dentists. These laws also prohibit Jews from having any sort of relationship with those aren't Jewish.
  • Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass) occurs

Herschel Grynszpan from Paris shoots and kills a German Embassy staff in retaliation of his poorly treated Jewish family. Hitler and propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels use the shooting as an opportunity to strike out at the Jews, brutalising and killing hundred of Jews vandalising shops so much that they never re-open. Hitler does not allow the riot to get too much out of control in the fear that other countries will not approve of his decision.
  • Germany invades Poland

Several million Jews from Poland are forced to live in ghettos and wear yellow stars so that they are easily identifiable as a Jew. German newspapers start talking about how to get rid of the "Jewish problem".
  • Hitler's Special Action Squads (SS Einsatzgruppen) are sent to terrorise

SS Einsatzgruppen members in Poland have issued instructions for Jews to be gathered into ghettos near railroads for the "final goal" that Hitler has in plan for the future. In addition, Hitler orders a census within the ghettos to implement Nazi policies.
  • The Nazis come up with "The Final Solution to the Jewish question"

Hitler and his top advisers decide to expand concentration camps and make them into death camps like Auschwitz. Millions of Jews are sent to these camps by train to be killed in a highly efficient yet incredibly impersonal way.
