  • Indusrial Revolution

    Indusrial Revolution
    1840 - Working day hours were lowered down to 10 hours and there was now a structured work and play time. This was a great influence on Sports such as Football as people had more time to play and enjoy the sport. 1900- 85% of the the population lived in towns and cities which meant the population was more diverse and there was more ideas being created.
  • Industrial Revolution

    Industrial Revolution
    1750 - 15% of UK population lived in towns/cities. 1810 - New roads, canals being developed, due to new technology and equipment. This would of had a benefit for football players and fans to get to the football grounds to watch or play. Factories opened in towns and cities. 1833- Government made new rules regarding 2 hours of education being made compulsory. 'playground recreation' was then introduced. This had a good impact on sport such as Football as children were learning how to play.
  • Rationalism

    Rationalism
    Rationalism is a term used to describe structured competition and sport. Rationalism was influenced in sport by that of how public schools delivered programmes e.g. Football.
    From this the Football FA was formed in 1863. 1888-English Football league was formed. This had a huge impact on Football as it increased the popularity of the sport, gaining fan around England and influencing young people to play it themselves.

    1937- The First Football game was televised in the UK. This had a big impact on the sport as it attracted a very large audience and fans all around the world. This was also influencing people especially young people to start getting involved with the sport.

    1900- Football was introduced as an exhibition sport and became the first team sport included in the Olympic Games. Since 1908, the sport has been held at every Olympic Games with the exception of the 1932 Los Angeles Games. 1904- FIFA formed. (Federation International Football association).This was important to the Football industry as this Company was in charge of Football all over the world and was key influences and organisers of the Sport.

    Agricultural Society 1800s
    Sports and activities that were popular back in the 1800s were hunting, mob football and bare knuckle fighting. In Rural/Farm Life there was less time to play sport e.g Mob Football as the Farmers had very long working hours usually from early morning to very late hours at night. This was bad for the Farmers, as they never had much time if not any to have a bit of time for leisure and fun off work.
  • Public Schools

    Public Schools
    1860- The first public school opened in 1860. Eton was the first public school to open in the UK and it was here where structured sport began to gather pace. Sports that were popular here were Rugby, Football, Rowing and Cricket. This was a key factor to bring in young children to take part in football by gaining experience in the sport. It was when these school rules were formed and the students played the games like gentlemen as opposed to mob football back in the 1800s.
  • 20th/21st Century

    20th/21st Century
    1938- Fair labour standards reduced working week to 40 hours. This meant that people had more free time to play Football and other sports and live a better and healthier lifestyle. 1979- Liverpool were the first team to wear a sponsor on their jersey which was Hitachi. This influenced other sports clubs to get involved with sponsorship to try and grow their club. 1986 - Sport NI was formed. This had an impact on sport in the UK as it increased the popularity of Football and other sports.

    1990- Sky TV came on screens. This was very beneficial to fans, players and supporters all around the world which allowed them to watch and Football match that was on. This again encouraged more fans and players to take part especially young people. 2016- Paul Pogba is the worlds most expensive player who signed for Manchester United for £100 million.

    Over half of Britain's army, 1.5 million troops spent most of the Second World War in Britain. Watching and playing sport was critical in keeping these troops occupied and entertained. Football matches also raised money for service charities. 1944- As in the First World War, many large factories had female as well as male works football teams. This influenced women also to take part in the sport. Competitive football matches were encouraged throughout the armed forces. This kept the troops fit
