Katie's Literacy History Timeline

  • Preschool Years

When I was in preschool we had a project about rocks. In order to complete the project we had to count the number of strings we were going to put on the rock for hair as well as the amount of goggly eyes used for eyes.
  • Bedtime Stories

Every night before bed my parents would read to my siblings and I a bedtime story of our own choosing. Between my brother, sister, and I, we would switch off night to night on who would choose the book that was being read to us. if we had maybe two copies of the book, I would try and follow along with what my parents were reading.
  • Kindergarten

Everyone remembers playing with colored cardboard bricks, right? was anyone else told they had to count the red or blue bricks in the tower they just made? because I did.
  • First grade

This is the grade when you really get into reading everything from books to magazines. And I remember silent reading times and my favorite book to read during that time was Clifford the Big Red Dog. This was my favorite because instead of reading the words on the page, you could read the pictuers and interpret your own story.
  • Soccer practice

During soccer practice we had to set up the cones but in order to do so we had to divide the amount of cones in half. After we figured it out we set half the cones up on one side of the field and the other half on the other side of the field. This helped with simple division.
  • Band

When I fist joined band, it involved a lot of counting but only up to 4. but depending on how long you were to rest, that's how many times you counted to 4. so if you rested 10 measures, you could either count 4 ten times or count out 40. this also involved a lot of multiplication.
  • Swim Team

When I joined swim team, I wasn't expecting so much math to be involved. Learning times table for 25 was a huge part of swimming. Also, some fun things we did was count how many freestyle strokes or breast strokes it would take to get from one end of the pool to the other.
  • Middle school years

These were the years when I really started to love reading especially murder mysteries or anything having an active story line. I wasn't into dramas or love stories because they didn't grab my attention right away.
  • Junior High Volleyball/Basketball

In these two sports, you kept score on a score board but points were counted differently. In Volleyball score was counted as 1 point at a time and went to 25 where as in Basketball every time you get a basket, you get 2 points, behind the three-point line, its 3 points and at the free-throw line its one point.
  • High School Years

I can honestly say I wasn't into reading a whole lot in high school but when I did I still enjoyed reading murder mysteries. my favorite murder mystery in high school was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
