Discovery
Francisco Vásquez de Coronado was the first european to set foot in modern day Kansas. It was originally inhabited by Indians. -
The Louisiana Purchase
Most of Kansas is purchased from Napoleon Bonapart. However, southwest Kansas belonged to Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Texas. -
Fort Leavenworth
The first settlement of white Americans in Kansas. Kansas was still not officially a state. -
End of the Mexican-American War
The end of the Mexican-American War. Southwestern Kansas is freed from Spain, Mexico and the Republic of Texas. -
Bleeding Kansas
1854 to 1860. Anti-slavery and pro_slavery settlers battle for popular sovereignty. Kansas became a free state. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act is passed. Nebraska and Kansas are added to the United States as territories. -
