New England Puritans
Founders of the first foundations of the American education system. Unable to except the doctrines and dogma from the Church of England, thousands of puritans established colonies in New England. The school was made up of their own way of living and they conveyed it through their education methods. -
Maria Montessori
One of the first to emphasize that learning best occurs when based on the individuality of the child in respect to each individuals unique needs or talents, rather then teaching all children according to a pre-conceived generalized norm. -
Scopes Monkey Trial
Fundamental Christians made it illegal to teach anything other than biblical theory of creation in high school. The ACLU promised to defend all teachers who tried to challenge this law and practice Darwinian Evolution. John Scopes from Dayton, TN took up the challenge and was arrested. A court date was set and the overflowed court room was entertained by Joe Mendi the Chimpanze. -
Brown Vs. Board
Linda Brown was required to attend the all-black school in Kansas after her father tried to enroll her in an all-white public school. Brown got together with the NAACP to fight unfair conclusion. Four years later, the Supreme Court reached a decision that it was equally unfair to separate based on race. In 1957, president Eisenhower dispatched the 101st airborne division paratroopers to Little Rock to protect the "Little Rock 9" and they finished the school year under federal protection. -
No Child Left Behind
State Department of Education was mandated to create an accountability system with annual progress reports. They were required to show student achievement levels from all student groups, even minority. New, higher standards were put in place for teachers and to use more scientifically based strategies in the classroom.
