Some members were supporters of Georgian independence from Russia and others were socialist revolutionaries. Through this people that he met in this organization, Stalin had his first came into contact with the ideas of Karl Marx. In May, 1899, Stalin was expelled from the Tiflis Theological Seminary

    Instead of attacking the Bolsheviks, Stalin argued that revolutionaries should be telling the people of Russia that they should take over the control of the country. In his speech, Lenin urged the peasants to take the land from the rich landlords and the industrial workers to seize the factories.
    Also he accused some Bolsheviks who were still supporting the Provisional Government of betraying socialism and suggested that they should leave the party.

This was the plan that Stalin wanted to develop, called "a voluntary and honest alliance" between Russia and all the national groups that lived within its borders.Then he had difficulties to control the people becuase new independent states were setting up without his agreement. When he saw that they weren't joining up, Stalin was forced to revise his policy and stated that self-determination.

Moreover, the population suffered immensely during the Great Terror of the 1930s, during which Stalin purged the party of 'enemies of the people', resulting in the execution of thousands and the exile of millions to the gulag system of slave labour camps.
