After enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, John begins helping other service members make free phone calls by accessing a a local telephone switchboard without authorization.

While stationed in Charleston Air Force Station in Maine, Draper created a pirate radio station "WKOS" [W-"chaos"], which he later shut down due to the objections of a licensed radio station.

After leaving the Air Force, Draper moved to Silicon Valley and learns to use a modified toy whistle from a Captain Crunch Cereal box to manipulate and hack phone lines through a process which became known as "Phone Phreaking".

Ron Rosenbaum with Esquire magazine publishes an investigative article "The secrets of the little blue box", which made the phone phreaks phone hacking activities public.

Draper begins attending De Anza College and working for KUPP radio in Cupertino, CA as an engineer and disk jokey.

Following the Esquire article, Draper was arrested on charges of toll fraud and sentenced to 5 years probation.

Today, Draper continues to battle allegations of misconduct, including unwanted sexual attention and stalking, which Draper denies. He currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada and has co-authored his autobiography "Beyond The Little Blue Box".
