    John Polkinghorne was born on 16 October 1930 to George and Dorothy Polkinghorne in Somerset, England. John was one of three children they(George and Dorothy) had together.

    Education

    In 1952, Polkinghorne earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and later, in 1955, his master's degree, also in mathematics. Turning to quantum field theory, he received his doctorate degree in 1956 from Trinity College in Cambridge. During his time as a professor of mathematical physics, he also received a doctorate degree in theoretical elementary particle physics in 1974. After five years of research, he decided to move on with his life and began theological studies in 1982.

    Science and Religion

    John Polkinghorne was a critical realist, meaning he believed that the basis of science and the existence of God were tied together. He argued 5 points "moments of enforced radical revision, a period of unresolved confusion, new synthesis and understanding, continued wrestling with unresolved problems, deeper implications." He also argued that scientific experiments do not go along with that of nature, and that most scientist don't look at the natural effects.
  • Ordained Priest

    In 1977, Polkinghorne started his theological studies at Westcott House in Cambridge, and after completing his studies, he was officially ordained on 6 June 1982.
  • Knighted

    In 1997, John Polkinghorne was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his dedication to science, religion and learning.
  • Templeton Prize

    In 2002, Polkinghorne was awarded the Templeton Prize for his research between science and religion and the progress between the two of them.
