By 1956 Polkinghorne had obtained a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a masters and a doctorate in quantum field theory from Trinity. He later became the lecturer in mathematical physics at Edinburgh then eventually at Cambridge.

By this time Polkinghorne had acquired another doctorate this time in theoretical elementary particle physics. With the many degrees he possessed and the many years of study he created a mathematical model to calculate paths of quantum particles. Shortly after his creation he was selected as a fellow of the Royal Society. Only a short 5 years later he concluded his research.

Probably one of the most popular ideas Polkinghorne is associated with is his beliefs of religion and science. At this time he had concluded his research and became ordained. With in the next decade or so he became the president of Queens' College where he eventually retired. During this time he published "The Way the World Is" basically explaining that a person of science could also be religious.
