John Dewey ( November 20, 1859-June 1, 1952)

  • Teaching career

    After landing a teaching job at seminary in oil city, Pennsylvania. He lost the position when his cousin resigned who helped him get the position. After being fired he went back to Vermont to start teaching a private school. During his free time he would study philosophical treatises and discuss it with his teacher. His main focus was philosophy and psychology.
  • writing

    Dewey wrote his first two books psychology and Leibniz new essays concerning the human understanding. Over the course of his lifetime he published over 1,000 works which included essays, articles and books. his writing covered range of topics like psychology, philosophy, educational theory, culture religion and politics.
  • Education Reform

    Dewey was a strong mined person about progressive educational reform. His belief was that education should be based on the principle of learning through doing. In 1894 he started his own experimental primary school which was called the university elementary school at the university of Chicago.   • Philosophy

    His philosophy treatises learning was inspired by readings of William James writing. Dewey philosophy mostly focused on human experience. Dewey philosophy also claimed man behave out of habit and that change often led to unexpected outcomes. For Dewey his thoughts was the means through which man came to understand and connect with the world.
