Birth
John Daly was born April 28th 1966 in Carmichael, California to Jim and Lou Daly. His father, Jim Daly, was an alcoholic and would often come home angry and drunk. He got his first set of golf clubs when he was four years old (Hit it Hard). -
John Daly's first win
John Daly entered the 1991 PGA Championship as a play-in player. This means that he was was not originally in the championship but played good enough in a different tournament to qualify. After leading the tournament for a number of day he faced a lot of criticism because of his swing and his character. His victory meal was at McDonald's because he didn’t have enough time to cash in his check yet (Hit it Hard). This shows that John persevered because he won against all odds. -
Donates $30,000
After John won $230,000 from a single tournament, he made good use of this money by giving $30,000 to a family to help educate eight and 12 year old girls. This is a shocker to most of the golfing world as John is known for his obsessive drinking, smoking and gambling (Verdi). Although John a lot of social issues, he has a sense of what is right and wrong by donating money to education of the younger generation. He is very generous and is giving to the community. -
Detained After Passing Out in Hooters
John Daly was detained after passing out drunk in a Hooters in North Carolina. He was in custody for 24 hours until he became sober. According to the Police, he was “extremely intoxicated and uncooperative" (Golfer). It is clear that John has not made golf a priority in his career because if he did, he could be one of the best golfers to ever play the game. Instead, he inherited his father's alcohol abuse. -
Lost Millions at Casino
John has been known to have bad temper on and off the golf course. After he lost a string of golf tournaments, he went to bars and casinos to release his anger. He said that he made $40 to 45 million by gambling while losing $95 to 98 million in a similar era (Hit it Hard). This is John being very impulsive and doing what he want without thinking of the negative things that could happen. Also, he is very reckless, and irresponsible with his life. -
First Champions Tour Victory
After a long wait, John Daly has finally won another golf tournament. His previous win was back in 2004 at the Buick Invitational. This win was not in the PGA tour verse the young guns that are now controlling tour, it was in the Champions Tour which is 50 plus year olds. (John).
