The next year, 1557, Nobunaga’s younger brother, Nobuyuki, joined in conspiracy with two family retainers and—according to legend—Nobunaga’s own mother, to depose him. Informed of the plot, Nobunaga pardoned the retainers but, by way of sending a strong message to the rest of his family, had Nobuyuki executed. In 1558, Nobunaga defeated the last of his rebellious family and, for the most part, succeeded in unifying the remainder.

In 1561, when the ruler of his neighbouring province, Mino, suddenly died leaving a weak son, Saito Tatsuoki, to rule his province. He then attacked the province and forced Tatsuoki into exile.
