James Bowie

  • Born April 10, 1796

    Bowie was born in Kentucky on April 10, 1796. While still very young, he moved with his family, first to Missouri, then in 1802 to Louisiana, where he spent most of his youth. It was there that he first acquired a reputation for his bold and fearless disposition.
    In 1827, Bowie participated in a bloody brawl near Natchez, Mississippi, where several men were killed and Bowie was wounded. After recovering the following year, he moved to Texas

  • Legendary Sandbar Fight

    On September 19, 1827 Jim was involved in a legendary “Sandbar Fight” in Louisiana Samuel Levi Wells III and Dr. Thomas Harris Maddox had agreed a duel. Bowie was on Sam’s Side. They both shot twice and missed so the drop the argument, but a brawl broke out and Bowie fought like a demon in spite of being shot three times and stabbed with a sword can. He was of course wounded and stabbed his opponents with abnormally sized knife, This later became know as the famous “Bowie knife”
