Is History a History of Progress?

  • Settling the West

    Settling the West
This painting is by John Gast and is called American Progress. It shows a higher power leading people in to Western America.
  • Invention of Railroad Tracks

    Invention of Railroad Tracks
On February 22, 1804, the locomotive hauled a load of 10 tons of iron, 70 men and five extra wagons the 9 miles between the ironworks at Pen-y-Darron in the town of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales to the bottom of the valley called Abercynnon. It took about two hours.
This was and was not a history of progress. Trains cause such bad polution, but it was a good source for transpertaion.
  • Gold Rush

    Gold Rush
The discovery of gold in the Sacramento Valley sparked the Gold Rush.. As news spread of the discovery, thousands of prospective gold miners traveled by sea or over land to San Francisco and the surrounding area; by the end of 1849, the non-native population of the California territory was some 100,000.
This was a huge step for Americans to find gold in unused land, but in a way, it wasn't a progression because of the population growth and the want of gold.
  • Homestead Act

The Homestead Act declared that any citizen or intended citizen could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land. Claimants must "improve" the plot with a dwelling and grow crops. After five years, if the original filer was still on the land, it was his property, free and clear.
This is not a history of progress because of the state of the farmers. The farmers needed their own cheap land to cultivate food. Without farmers, there isn't much of a food supply.
  • Industrialization/Immigration/Urban America

    Industrialization/Immigration/Urban America
With the great advances of the Industrial Revolution, inventors continued to work throughout the rest of the 19th and early 20th century on ways to make life easier while increasing productivity. The foundations set throughout the mid-1800's set the stage for many more inventions to come.
  • Captains of Industry/ Robber Barrons.

Captains of Industry built business empires out of small businesses and helped the industrialization of America.
Robber Barrons made fortunes for themselves while overseeing tough working conditions in their factories. Workers worked long hours, for little pay, in harsh working environments.
Both were equally good in the 1800's, but in the long run, they messed up the govrnment by under paying people and making money for themselves.
  • New Technology

Pratt & Whitney Company is founded at Hartford, Connecticut, by Jay, New York-born mechanical engineer Francis Ashbury Pratt, 33, and Biddeford, Maine-born machinist Amos Whitney who have been working for the local Phoenix Iron Works. Pratt has initiated a system for making interchangeable parts that will be used beginning next year in Civil War rifles.
This was and was not a progress, this caused more deaths yet more protection.
  • New Immigration

Do to new technology & new ways of living, more & more people came to the United States for new jobs, industrialization, & a new life for themselves.
This is a progress because people were making better lives and choices for themselves.
  • Progressivism

    Progressivism
This is Theodore Roosevelt in 1892. I chose this picture because he was a huge political figure in the Progressivism period.
  • Election of Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States of America. He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Ara. "Big Stick" Policy.
Haveing Theodore as a president was a progression due to his leadership of the country.
  • Meat Packaging Act

As of 1906, the Secretary of Agriculture was authorized to inspect and condemn any meat product found to be unfit by human consumption standards. This law was motivated for protecting Americans and their diet.
This was a progression because it helped the health of America & its citizans.
  • Imperialism

    Imperialism
A clash of world powers all went for the same land. Leading to fighting and tension throughtout the world.
  • Federal Reserve Act of 1913

The 1913 U.S. legislation that created the current Federal Reserve System. The Federal Reserve Act intended to establish a form of economic stability through the introduction of the Central Bank, which would be in charge of monetary policy, into the United States. The Federal Reserve Act is perhaps one of the most influential laws concerning the U.S. financial system.
This was a progression because we still use this system today. This Economic change was progressive and hasn't failed us yet.
  • World War I

    World War I
World War I was an extremely bloody war, with huge losses of life and little ground lost or won. Fought mostly by soldiers in trenches, World War I saw an estimated 10 million military deaths and another 20 million wounded. While many hoped that World War I would be "the war to end all wars".
No progress at all. I know fighting for what you want is important, but I don't see the need for lives lost & people killing eachother. picture of the war and the physical damage
  • The Home Front.

To influence public opinion, the federal government embarked on its first ever domestic propaganda campaign. Wilson chose muckraking journalist George Creel to head the government agency. The Propaganda made a strong home front.
This was Progress because if you didn't have pride at home, soldiers wouldn't have pride anywhere else.
  • New Land

Durning the Imperialsim Period, more and more people were looking to gain more power by gaining more land. After wanting it and a lot of claims, Africa as we know it now, was divided into small sections by a number of nations.
This is not progress because more & more nations became greedy and power hungry.
  • Bonds

Liberty bonds were first utilized during the first World War to support the allied cause in World War I. This allowed private citizens to purchase a bond to help support the military effort. After the war, the bond could be redeemed for its purchase price plus interest.
Bonds were a good thing at the time, but became known to make a huge dent on the economy in world war II which is not a history of progresss.
  • Treaty Of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after World War One had ended in 1918 and in the shadow of the Russian Revolution and other events in Russia. The treaty was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris - hence its title - between Germany and the Allies.
This shows progress because everyones trying to keep the peace and trying to make the progress of making the world a better place.
  • 1920's

    1920's
This picture is a picture of Louis Armstrong. He was a very popular musician in the 1920's. He was mostly known for his insturment playing and jazz music.
  • Yellow Journalism

Yellow Journalism is one of the products of American imperialism. Modern day versions of this type of journalism The Sun. Yellow journalism is defined as sensational news reporting that blurs the line between fact and fiction.
This is not progressive just because some people can't trust what they hear. If people are not getting the right story, then things are going to go wrong.
  • Red Scare

The so-called "Red Scare" refers to the fear of communism in the USA during the 1920’s. It is said that there were over 150,000 anarchists or communists in USA in 1920 alone and this represented only 0.1% of the overall population of the USA.
This is not progress at all because of the need to fight with people and trying to teach people what they should do and how they should do it. Communist People did not like that and wanted what they set thier minds on.
  • Music<3

Jazz gained popularity in America and worldwide by the 1920s. Nothing quite like it had ever happened before in America. New exuberant dances were devised to take advantage of the upbeat tempo's of Jazz and Ragtime music.
This is Progress due to the fact, my music that I listen to today, like some of John Mayer, is jazz, so I'm thankful and have a lot of respect for 1920's music and performers.
  • Cars

    Cars
By the late 1920s, the automobile had firmly established itself as the newest and most popular method of road transport.
This is progress because a car can get you places faster, but it also isn't progressive due to polution and environmental complications.
  • Hoover

However, the seeds of a great depression had been planted in an era of prosperity that was unevenly distributed. In particular, the depression had already sprouted on the American farm and in certain industries. The stock market crashed in the fall of 1929. On just one day, October 29, frantic traders sold off 16,400,000 shares of stock.
This is not progress because although the depression happened during his presidency, everyone blamed Hoover for it.
  • The Great Depression/ New Deal

    The Great Depression/ New Deal
The Great Depression was not a progress at all. It set America back & showed how the U.S. government and economy is weaker then the citizens thought.
  • Black Tuesday

Attempts to salvage the market were unsuccessful. On Oct. 28, 1929, now known as “Black Monday,” the market closed down 12.8 percent. The following day, “Black Tuesday,” more than 16 million shares were traded as the Dow dropped another 12 percent. Many prominent American companies and financial institutions collapsed, as their company stock became virtually worthless.
This was not at all any form of progress, the economy was slowly shutting down & there was not much anyone could do.
  • Rugged Individualism

The belief that all individuals, or nearly all individuals, can succeed on their own and that government help for people should be minimal. The phrase is often associated with policies of the Republican party and was widely used by the Republican president Herbert Hoover.
Not Progressive because later on people used this phrase to refer to the great depression and moves made by Hoover.
  • Hitler

    Hitler
Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Almost immediately he began secretly building up Germany's army and weapons. In 1934 he increased the size of the army, began building warships and created a German airforce. Compulsory military service was also introduced.
This was not progress at all. Hitler turned out to be a power hungry man willing to kill anyone he didn't like. He was one of the main causes of World War II.
  • Great Depression throughout WWII

    Great Depression throughout WWII
In 1940, unemployment was still at 14%. However, with America's entry into World War II and subsequent mobilization, unemployment rates dropped to 2% by 1943. While some argue that the war itself did not end the Great Depression, others point to the increase in government spending and increased job opportunities as reasons why it was a large part of the national economic recovery.
This was not a progress in history because the depression just got worse as the war went on.
  • Propaganda of WWII

    Propaganda of WWII
When it was suggested that World War II was approaching. Even as the war started in Europe with the invasion of France, many Americans thought that the U.S. should avoid becoming involved. The United States government recognized that American participation was necessary, and quickly stepped up pro-war propaganda.
This is not progress because people shouldn't join the war. War is bad in general & we had no reason to be there. I don't believe propaganda should have been used to get people to join
  • World War II

    World War II
This picture is of the Battles fought during World War II. World War II was and was not a progression. It was some what successful that we helped fight for whats right, but it wasn't our fight to help in. Successful because of us helping to bring down Hitler and his Nazi party. Unsuccessful due to lives lost, blood shed, and tears that fell.
  • Communist Victory In China

The Nationalist Army essentially disintegrated after the fall of Tientsin and Peking. By July, the Nationalists announced that they would begin to withdraw to Taiwan. On October 1st, the People's Republic of China was officially proclaimed, with Peking as its capital.
This was not progressive due to the gain of communism and the lack of a better way of governing.
  • Cold War/Korean War/ 1950's

    Cold War/Korean War/ 1950's
The Cold War is the name given to the relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War Two. The Cold War was to dominate international affairs for decades and many major crises occurred - the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary and the Berlin Wall being just some. For many the growth in weapons of mass destruction was the most worrying issue.
This was not Progress because of the fighting still going on due to world war II.
  • Music

The music of the 1950s flourished as a result of the previous decade. The 50s saw the emergence and rise of what would come to be known as Rock ‘n Roll, but it was also witnessed the popularity of Country and Western music in a variety of forms.
The music in the 50's was a big deal to me because I'm a classic rock & roll type of song listener. I love the music that cam from this time period and definently think its progress.
  • Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights Movement was at a peak from 1955-1965. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, guaranteeing basic civil rights for all Americans, regardless of race, after nearly a decade of nonviolent protests and marches, ranging from the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott to the student-led sit-ins of the 1960s to the huge March on Washington in 1963.
This was progress because people were for the most part peacefully protesting for their own rights.
  • Suberbinization.

The suburbanization of United States was a central part of the campaign to create the ideal American family, and the federal government played a direct role in the mass migration from the cities.
This was progress and not progress; progressive because people were all spreading out instead of just populating citys, but now people are building homes everywhere.
  • Martin Luther KIng Jr.

MLK was an eloquent Baptist minister and leader of the civil-rights movement in America from the Mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. King promoted non-violent means to achieve civil-rights reform and was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
  • Vietnam War

The Vietnam War was the prolonged struggle between nationalist forces attempting to unify the country of Vietnam under a communist government and the United States (with the aid of the South Vietnamese) attempting to prevent the spread of communism. Engaged in a war that many viewed as having no way to win, U.S. leaders lost the American public's support for the war.
No progress due to the fact that many people died when it was our country in jepordy anyway.
  • Vietnam/ Watergate/1960's

    Vietnam/ Watergate/1960's
The 60's was a time for war, running, standing up for your believes, hippie movements, and polotic scandles.
The progress is Hippie Movement, Music and Civil RIghts Music.
Non-Progressive is the war and politics.
  • JFK/ LBJ/ Civil Rights Movement

    JFK/ LBJ/ Civil Rights Movement
The 1960's, was the storm before the calm, It was the era where people actually started to say what they wanted to. It was for a time of wanting peace and a new start.
Progressive, because some people with the idea of peace had the right idea, but this leads to assassinations & death.
  • JFK

John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy, often referred to by his initials JFK, was the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He was a president that wanted peace & happiness.
JFK did make progress in America and did turn a lot around. He was a peaceful and loving man and made a great president.
  • Hippie Movement

Shreds of the hopeful ‘60s remained. In the summer of 1969, for example, more than 400,000 young people trooped to the Woodstock music festival in upstate New York, a harmonious three days that seemed to represent the best of the peace-and-love generation.
The Hippie Movement was just a time of good relaxation and protest of the governments ways and war. It was a peaceful protest and they made themselves heard and known which is Progress in History.
  • Watergate

Watergate has entered the political lexicon as a term synonymous with corruption and scandal, yet the Watergate Hotel is one of Washington’s plushest hotels. Even today, it is home to former Senator Bob Dole and was once the place where Monica Lewinsky laid low. It was here that the Watergate Burglars broke into the Democratic Party’s National Committee offices on June 17, 1972.
No progress due to loss of trust in our government or some of our government.
