Irvin McDowell was promoted to the rank of brigadier General as a result of political conections to the Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon P. Chase. Irvin also became a General of the Civil War.

Irvin led the Confederate to the battle of Bull Run. The Union lost the Battle of Bull Run. Soon after the battle Irvin was repalced by George McClellan.
