On November 20, 1998, the Russians launched the first module of the ISS named Zarya. Two weeks later, the Americans launched Unity, which docked with Zarya.

On July 12. 2000, Zvezda docked with Zarya/Unity. This module contained the living quarters for the space station.

The Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart upon reentry on February 1, 2003. This caused a delay of over two years on the ISS.

On October 22, 2010, the ISS had been continuously occupied for almost ten years. This surpassed the previous record of continuous occupancy held by the space station Mir.
