Should we stay or should we go?
Admist a family debate on whether or not to leave a war stricken Vietnam, Vu is adament that they should leave but his reasons may not be pure. His sister believes that he only wants to go to America to be like his idol, Bruce Lee.

Vu becomes a man. His shining moment where he earns Ha's respect.
As the masses flee Vietnam for ships to take them away, Vu steps up and prevents his family from being trampled. He puts his mother in front of him, his sister on his shoulders and he pushes his two brothers forward. In a moment when he would have been justified to be scared, Vu was just the opposite. He literally put his family before himself. He showed tremendous bravery and his sister Ha immediately begins to respect him. She vows never to make fun of Bruce Lee again. -
Front kicks and back kicks
The family must endure brutal conditions on the ship. The mood is miserable. Vu however, maintains an even keel by practicing his karate moves. It is obvious that it is his true passion -
Helping a troubled soul.
Brother Khoi is harboring a chick. He is being impractical and emotional. Vu realizes this and takes action. He takes Khoi down by force and makes him give up the chick. It had to be done. -
Head chef of the refuge came
Vu becomes head chef of the refuge camp in Guam. He somehow manages to get extra food for his family. -
Ladies Man
Girls gather to watch Vu break boards. pg. 99 -
Alabama Slammer
Vu is discriminated against and attacked by an American in his new home town in Alabama. He subdued him using marital arts but he made sure not to harm him. He vows to teach Ha self defense because she is being bullied. pg. 152-153 -
Vu Lee
Vu makes everyone call him Vu Lee. He really loves Bruce Lee -
A Vu of all trades.
Vu provides for his family by working two jobs. He also teaches the local kids martial arts. pg. 192-193 -

Vu shows up on his motorcycle to save Ha from a bully and he looks cool doing it. pg. 227 -

Vu moves to San Francisco to pursue cooking and live in the same city as Bruce Lee
