    Tutsies migrate to what is now Rwanda

    On an unknown date in the 1300's the African Tribe know as Tutsies migrated into what is know Rwanda. This is the first known time that the Tutsies living in Rwanda.
  • Rwanda is established

    On an unknown date in the 1600's, Tutsi King Kigeri Rwabugiri establishes a unified state with a centralised military structure. This is the first time Rwanda has an organized country.
  • British explorer finds Rwanda

    ON an unknown date in 1858, a British explorer Hanning Speke is the first European to visit the area. This marks the first time a non-african has entered Rwanda and sparked interest in the country.
  • Rwanda becomes part of German East Africa

    On an unknown date in 1890, Rwanda becomes a part of German East Africa. This is the first time Rwanda is under control of an outside country.
  • Belgian forces occupy Rwanda

    On an unknown date in 1916, Belgium takes control of Rwanda which would be the start of a very long reign. Promote Tutsies to have control over Hutus.
  • Belgium introduce identity cards

    On an unknown date in 1935, Belgium introduces indentity cards to differentiate from the Tutsies and the Hutus.
  • Hutus want a voice in their government

    Hutus issue manifesto calling for a change in Rwanda's power structure to give them a voice commensurate with their numbers; Hutu political parties formed. First act of indepndence wanted by Rwandan Hutus.
  • Rwandan Revolution

    On an unknown date in 1959, the Hutu stared to kill Tutsies as the tension grew more and more from the Hutus lack of power. This forced over 10000 Tutsies into neighbouring countries.
  • Referendum

    On an unknown date in 1961, the pro-Hutu Belgians held a referendum to abolish their control over Rwanda.
  • Independence

    On an unknown date inn 1962, Rwanda seperates from Burundi and gains independence from Belgium.
