Important events of the WW2

  • Hitler troops ocuppied Dinamark and Norway.

    The control of Norway was important because Narvik ( a the main outlet of iron-ore) was vital for German armmament industry.
  • The Phoney War.

    The Phoney War.
    Very little happened in the west for the next five months but in the east the Russians took over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and invaded Finland (November). At the same time French and Germans manned their defenses. This lack of action was described by American press as the 'phoney war'.

    Germany invaded Poland.
  • Holland, France and Belgium were attacked by Germany.

    It made British opposition precarious and Churchill became Prime Minister.

    The Luftwaffe tryed to destroy British but for the RAF was not enough. Germany surronded and was the major turning point of the war.

    Hitler's troops invaded Russia. This act played a major role in the Nazi genocide. However, the German forces ended up failing
  • Pearl Harbor.

    Pearl Harbor.
    Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, starting war with the US. Japanese troops took the americans unexpected and destroyed 350 aircraft, 5 battleships and 3700 man were killed or seriously injured.
  • Midway Island.

    At Midway Island in the Pacific the Americans beat off a powerful Japanese attack. Midway proved to be a crucial turning point in the battle for the Pacific
  • El Alamein.

    El Alamein.
    The Axis army of Italy and Germany suffered a decisive defeat by the British Eighth Army.
  • Stalingrad.

    Stalingrad.
    Successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad.t stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favour of the Allies.
  • The fall of Italy.

    This was the first stage in the Axis collapse. British and American troops landed in Sicily from the sea and air and captured the whole island, causing the downfall of Mussolini.
  • Operation Overlord.

    the Allied forces landed troops on Normandy beginning the march eastward to defeat Germany.
  • THE ATOMIC BOMB.

    THE ATOMIC BOMB.
    the Americans dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing perhaps as many as 84 000 people and leaving thousands more slowly dying of radiation poisoning. Three days later they dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which killed perhaps another 40 000; after this the Japanese government surrendered.
  • Hitler committed suicide and Germany surrendered.

    As the Battle of Nuremberg and the Battle of Hamburg ended with American and British occupation, in addition to the Battle of Berlin raging above him with the Soviets surrounding the city he commited siucide.
