    In 1942 the Japanese force landed in the Philippines. An American-Filipino defense force happened to be ready for an attack like this. They put up a good fight, but eventually were pushed back to the Baatan Peninsula. There they were forced to surrender, and Japan took nearly 60,000 prisoners. The Americans and Filipinos were forced to walk 65 miles to a war camp. So many people died that it became known as the Baatan Death March.
