Captain James Cook crossed the Antarctic Circle and circumnavigated Antarctica. He came across many icebergs but was not able to sight land so he declared that the continent would not benefit the world.

Captain Thaddeus, a Russian Navel Officer croosed the Antarctic Circle for the first time since Captain Cook. Unlike Cook, Captain Thaddeus spotted land which he described as "icefield with small hillocks."

On the 30th of January in 1820, shortly after Captain Thaddeus's discorvery, Brittish navalofficers William Smith and Edward Bransfield also saw Antarctica.

Nathaniel Palmer, an American Sealer also saw Anatarctica in 1820. As there were no natives of Antarctica, Antartcica had actually been discoverded since there was no one living on it who had known about the location of the coninent.

Another American sealer named Cptain John Davis can the first landing on continental Antarctica.

James Clark Ross, a Brittish naval officer and scientist, took two ships named the Erebus and Terror and sailed within 80 mi;les of Antarcticas coast until he was stopped bu a large ice barrier now called the Ross Ice Shelf. He also founded an active volcanoe which he named after his ship, Erebus, now the second largest volcanoe in Antarctica. -
Captain Scott lead the first first Antarctic Expedition along with Ernest Shackleton and Edward Wilson to try and reach the South Pole. Sadly, they were forced to turn back after two months because of thecrew members suffering snow blindness and scurvy, reaching 82 degrees south.

Ernest shackelton returned to Antarctica to attempt crossing the contine t of Antarctica for the first time.The crossing was not successful as their ship was crushed into the sea ice. in 1917 the party was eventually rescued.

Sir George Wilkins from Australia and Car; Benjamin Eilson from America were the first people to fly over Antarctica, around the peninsula region.

An expedition of 4700 men and 13 ship and 23 areoplanes were sent to Antarctica to photograph the coast for map making.

Boerge Ousland, a Norweigen polar explorer, photographer and writer became the first person to cross Antarctica unsupported. It took him 64 days to travel towing a 180kg sled using skies and a sail from Berkner Island to Scott Base.
