    Slaves were not fed an adequate amount of food, and their diet consisted of meat three times a week or even less. Sometimes they were only fed cornbread and water. The York County Court settled the case when William Cluton was imprisoned for encouraging the slaves to rebel when he told the king about the cruel standards. After witnesses testified towards his good character, he was freed. This was one of the first stances against the starvation and malnourishment of servants.
