Horace Mann believed every American child has a right to education. In this year, the first Mann's Normal School was opened, which offered education to every child. Without Normal Schools public education would not have been established, leaving education to a few select, who had prestige and lived close enough to a school building.

While women were allowed to learn essentials, in this year Mary Lyon opened the first female seminary. This gave women the opportunity to further their education in a secondary school, which was just as demanding as male schools. Looking at today's teaching population, female teachers outnumber male teachers and this was possible because of Mary Lyon's determination.

When four landowners in Kalamazoo, Michigan went to court to avoid having their property taxes raised, they never realized they would loose financially but win for the future. Public education might struggle with inner city schools, compared to suburban schools, but it is free to all students. Without the use of property taxes many children today would financially not be able to receive an education.

The National Education Association created a school curriculum, which was based on eight years of elementary school and four years of secondary school. This system created the bases for today's schools, establishing a twelve years school system across the country. This system also allowed students to choose electives, furthering their education in fields of their interest.

This year the University of Wisconsin - Superior introduced its first online classes. With opening education to internet classes, students are able to finish school without being bound to specific locations or time zones. Online classes allow students to learn during pandemics and also gives busy adults options to further their education to become the leaders and teachers of tomorrow.
