Immigration vs. Migration

  • Europe

    Serfdom ends in all of the countires in europe. This frees the peasants that were required to stay in one area to work. They now were free to move to America to expand and seek other job opopurtinities.
  • Irish

    The Irish potato famine decimated the food supply in Ireland. A disease destroyed the edible roots and the leaves, causing sickness upon eating. The lack of food cuases many immagrants to flee to other countries looking for a more reliable food source.
  • Germans

    Germany was facing a weakened economy and a suffering military force. The Napoleonic Wars hurt their economy and caused them to go into massive debt. The weak military could no longer protect them, so many citezins fled the country.
  • California Gold Rush

    Many people moved from the East to the West Coast when they heard of the gold there. People wanted to get rich quick, so they packed up their things and moved West. This decreased the population in the east, and made it boom in the West.
  • China

    China's civil war caused economic and political chaos. It was the bloodiest war in chinas history, and 20 to 70 million people died. To espace the dangerous country, many fled to America where it was safer.
  • Native Americans

    Originally, natives were given the great plains to live on. Over time though, the ats that protected them were changed, and they were only given certain parts of land to live on. Some tribes had to move hundreds of miles to relocate because of the building of train tracks and cities.
  • Homestead Act

    The homestead act gave out free land to people, encouraging them to move to the great plains. They did this to populate the mid west, and to help overcrowding on the east coast. This gave out millions of acres of land out to thousands of people who left home to become farmers.
  • England

    A slump in their idustral revolution caused them to go into massive debt. A lot of people lost thier jobs and familie sbegan going broke. Those who were fired or didnt have jobs left large cities to escape to other countires like America to look for jobs.
  • Scandenavia

    Scandenavia was going thorugh an economic downfall which casued low wages. Crop failure and unemployment added to the pain the ocuntry was feeling. Some fled due to religious restrictions, so they cam to america to worship who they want.
  • Russia

    Russia was filled with poor pesants and persecuted jews. The working conditions in russia were far below those in Europe. They fled to escape persecution and to work in better facotries.
  • Mexico

    Mexico was full of low skill workers in need of jobs. They have been sending them across the border to look for some of the job oppurtunities here in america. This caused America to make a border patrol to keep these illegal aliens out of the country.
  • The Great Migration

    Thousands of blacks moved to the North, West Coast, and Midwest to escape the south.The KKK and other groups hated them and were committing acts of violence against them. They moved to escape danger and seek jobs and freedom in other parts of the country.
  • African Americans to Big Cities

    During the world wars, many blacks move to large american cities. They moved because the men in the war left a wide variety of jobs open, so they came to work for them. Even though the jobs were mostly low paying and low skill jobs, they helped fund our economy and helped to provide for our troops.
  • Canada

    Indistrial collapse left many unemployed. Their booming economy came crashing down, so they had to lay a lot of people off. The job oppurtunities here in america looked appealing to the canadians in search of jobs.
  • Jews

    Hitler was killing all of the Jews in germany. The holocasut put jewsin concentration camps before killing them. The remaining jews needed to escape to wherever they could where hitler could not get a hold of them.
  • Dust Bowl

    Many people from the Midwest moved to the West Coast because dust was destroying their lives. The dust storms would destroy their fields and make it impossible to grow food. It made the land fertile and ruined lives, so many were forced to move to be able to make food and continue living the farming lives they knew of.
  • Southeast Asia

    War and commust takeovers cause a flood of politcal refugees. The comminist countires werenot treating the people right, and war made living there dangerous. They moved to america to find a safe place to stay with a good governemnt.
  • Suburban Migration

    Families were seeing billboards and posters of how easy life looked in suburban areas. People started moving into suburban neighborhoods for the kind neighbors and the laid back lives. These were new to them, so they appeared to be a luxury.
  • Improved Transportation

    The creation of cars and improved trains made it easier for people to move. Trains helped people move far distances quickly to relocate from the north to the south or the south to the west. Cars helped people get to work easier, so they could move out of the cities, and still be able to access their job quickly.
  • Cubans

    Fidel castro was a communist in charge of the country. The missle crisis caused many to runbecasue of the scare of nucleur war. America was very close to cuba and easy to get to, so many fled here.
  • Sun Belt

    The sun belt are the southern states where the weather is nice almost year round. Elderly usually move to the sun belt after they retire to live a warm and nice life. Florida has been receiving more delegates because of the large population increase in the state over the past few decades.
  • NY and CA

    New York and California have been losing a large percent of their population over the past few decades. The high taxes and overcrowding makes the states not appear good to those looking to move, so residents look to move to small states with less people and better job opportunities. There are more jobs in other states, and those are some things people look for when looking to move.
