(Page 31) Many people in the Seam were poor, including Katniss and her family. Therefore, the bread helped Katniss save her starving family.

    "Gale spreads the bread slices with the soft goat cheese, carefully placing a basil leaf on each while I strip the bushes of their berries." (Page 8) Katniss' family does not have enough money to be able to buy food. So, instead of buying food, Gale helps Katniss to hunt and gather for their families.

    Madge Gives Katniss the Mockinjay Pin
    "'Here, I'll put it on your dress, all right?' Madge doesn't wait for an answer, she just leans in and fixes the bird to my dress." (Page 38) Katniss receives the pin from Magde for good luck. This helps Katniss remember her district later, when she wears it into the arena.

We'll deal with her in the morning.'" (Page 183) Peeta saves Katniss' life. The Careers would have killed her if he didn't say that. This also gives Katniss extra time to find a way out of their trap.

    "For a while, we hold eachother's gaze. Then, without even rustling a leaf, her little hand slides into the open and points to something above my head." (Page 184) Rue was pointing to a tracker jacker nest. The nest is very helpful to Katniss because she can cut it down to drive away the Careers below her. This helps her get away safely from them, even though she may get stung a few times.

    "My first gift from a sponsor! Haymitch must have had it sent in during the anthem. The pot easily fits in the palm of my hand. What can it be? Not food surely. I unscrew the lid and I know by the scent that it's medicine." (Page 188) Haymitch helps Katniss by giving her medicine for her burns. After receiving treatment, she recovers quickly.

    "'Get up! Get up!' I rise, but he's still pushing at me. What? What is going on? He shoves me away from him hard. 'Run!' he screams. 'Run!' Behind him, Cato slashes his way through the brush." (Pages 193-194) Peeta saves Katniss from a threatening Cato when she is unsteady after being stung by tracker jackers. Without Peeta's warning, Cato would have likely killed Katniss.

    "Thresh brings the rock down hard against Clove's temple." (Page 287) He saved Katniss from Clove who was slowly torturing her to death. Katniss helped Rue earlier in the games, so Thresh spared Katniss' life instead of letting Clove kill her.

    "The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare. The frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. 'Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen, and Peeta Mallark!'" (Page 345) The Gamemakers changed the rules and let Katniss and Peeta both win. Katniss is now able to go home to her family and they will never be poor or starving again.
