  • 1848

    Over 200 women met at Seneca Falls, USA, to write a "bill of rights" detailing the social, civil and religious rights of women.
  • 20th century.

    During the 20th century, a succession of wars and revolutions made many peolpe keen to develop international organications that would work to reduce conflicts, and help civilians.
  • 1919

    After the World War I, Britain, France and the USA organized an international peace conference in Paris. This was the first time ever that a country's war lider had been accused of crimes against human rights.
  • 1933

    From 1933, the Nazi covenment began to exterminate men and women with mental and physical disabilties, and to persecute minority groups including Jews and gypsies
  • World War II

    World War II began in 1939, with Britain, France, Russia and later USA, fighting against Nazi Germany and its allies Italy and Japan.
  • Four freedoms.

    US president Roosevelt declared that "four freedoms" were essential for all people. Freedoms were: religion, speech, wat and fear,
  • 1945

    In 1945, the League of Nations was repeclaced by the United Nations Organizaton, which drew up the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • The declaration.

    The declaration was signed up in 1948. Since then, human rights ideas have been encouraged in many different ways.
  • 1950

    In the 1950s and 60s, leaders of Asian and African countries began to demand independence from their European conolian rulers, and many based their compaigns in human rights ideas, like Mahatma Gandhi and his fight for Indian independence from British rule.
  • 1960-1990

    From 1960s to 1990s, feminist movements campaigned for wormen's rights.
  • 1970

    In the 1970, liberation movements in South America demanded freedom from dictatorship.
