"How Much Land Does a Man Need?"

    Sisters argue about peasant life vs. town life. Peasant wife sticks up for her husband and says they have all they need. The other sister disagrees and thinks peasant life is no good and her life is better because her family and her have all they need and more.

    Pahom the peasant wifes husband was on the oven listening. He thinks if he had more land he wouldn't fear the devil or worry about anything.

    The devil was listening behind the oven and said he'd give Pahom land and he will get him into his power.

    Pahom's animals get onto a lady's land all the time and her steward makes him pay a fine
  • Lady sells her land

    In the winter the lady was going to sell her 300 acres of land and the keeper of the inn wants to buy it. The peaseants are worried because the keeper of the inn will fine them even more. The peasants got the land, but they couldn't split it evenly.

    Pahom wants to buy some other land. Him and his wife scrape together some more for half of it and were going to pay the rest in two years. He finally had land of his own. In a year he paided off the money he owed. He was very happy.

    In return for his gifts they gave himi as much land as he wanted at 1000 roubles a day. Pahom was surpised. The chief said if you don't return to the same place you started every day your money is lost.

    On the seventh day he reached the place. The women did everything there. He was greeted well. He gave them presents. The people liked him.
