Sisters argue about peasant life vs. town life. Peasant wife sticks up for her husband and says they have all they need. The other sister disagrees and thinks peasant life is no good and her life is better because her family and her have all they need and more. -
Pahom wants a better life
Pahom the peasant wifes husband was on the oven listening. He thinks if he had more land he wouldn't fear the devil or worry about anything. -
The devil is listening
The devil was listening behind the oven and said he'd give Pahom land and he will get him into his power. -
Animals get into ladies land
Pahom's animals get onto a lady's land all the time and her steward makes him pay a fine -
Lady sells her land
In the winter the lady was going to sell her 300 acres of land and the keeper of the inn wants to buy it. The peaseants are worried because the keeper of the inn will fine them even more. The peasants got the land, but they couldn't split it evenly. -
Pahom wants to but some of the land
Pahom wants to buy some other land. Him and his wife scrape together some more for half of it and were going to pay the rest in two years. He finally had land of his own. In a year he paided off the money he owed. He was very happy. -
Other animals would get on Pahoms land.
Other animals would get on Pahoms land. He forgave their owners. He finally was over it and went to the distict court. He thought 'They'll distroy all I have, they must be thought they'll distroy all I have they must be tought a lesson.' -
Peaseants were fned.
Peasants were fined. His neighbors held a gridge and let their animals on his land on purpose. One of the peasants cut down some of his trees. Pahom was furious. -

The peasant talks about new land with with, Pahom desired to live there and wants to sell everything and move, He goes to visit Volga ( the new land). He walked 300 miles on foot. The new land had 25 acres per man. Pahom got back in autum in and began to sell his land. -

HIs family moves and he applied for admission to the commune. He had three times as much land. 10 times better than before. He sowed wheat for three years crops were good. He wanted his own land. A peasant was selling 1200 acres. He bargained with the peasants. -
Pahom has tea with a tradesman.
Pahom has tea with a tradesman and he tells Pahom how to make better deals with people. The trades man talked of new land. He found out how to get to the place after the tradesman left. He left his wife to look after the crop. He left with his servant. -
They gave him gifts.
In return for his gifts they gave himi as much land as he wanted at 1000 roubles a day. Pahom was surpised. The chief said if you don't return to the same place you started every day your money is lost. -
He reached the land.
On the seventh day he reached the place. The women did everything there. He was greeted well. He gave them presents. The people liked him. -
He starts the next day
He starts the next day. His mind was filled with thought of the land. He stays awake all night. -
The next day
The next day his eyes glistened with sight of the land, He started. There are four shifts in a day. He took off his boots and started walking. He kept wanting to go farther. He turned around when the people on the hillock looked like ants. -
He grew tired
He began to grow tired. It was noon. He felt sleepy, but kept going. He walked with difficulty. It was hot. The sun began to rn and lost everything. -
He wasn't going to make it.
He realized he couldn't make it, but he did. As he got their his servant ran to him. Bloodflogg from his mouth. -
