    Holden leaves Pencey Prep
    Late on a Saturday night, Holden comes to the conclusion that he would rather roam the streets of New York until at least Wednesday instead of waiting out his time at Pencey Prep.
  • Holden fights Stradlater

    After Holden feels that Stradlater, his roommate, didn't treat Jane Gallagher, his childhood friend, correctly on a date, he starts a fist fight with him. Stradlater, being in much better shape than Caulfield, obviously beats him down.

    Holden's Story

    Although there is no clear year that the majority of the novel The Catcher in the Rye takes place, it is theorized that the story-telling is told in 1949 due to clues presented in the book. According to the most widely accepted theory, the days in which the story is told are December 18th, 19th, and 20th.
  • Holden checks in at the Edmont Hotel.

    Holden checks in at the Edmont Hotel.
    After taking a train to New York, Holden eventually checks in at the Edmont Hotel - a pretty low class establishment. There, he observes some.. interesting people.
  • Holden goes to the lavender room at the hotel.

    After Holden checks in at the low class hotel, he decides to entertain himself by going to the Lavender Room, an even lower class bar. There, he meets three older women, and dances with one of them. More lies are spread around, and in the end, he ends up just as bored as when he started.
  • Holden buys Phoebe a record.

    Remembering that he wanted to get his sister Phoebe a copy of the record "Little Sherley Beans", Holden goes into the first record store he could find. Out of pure luck, the store actually has it, and he purchases it quickly. However, later on, he accidentally drops it, shattering it beyond repair instantly.
  • Holden sets up a date with his Sally Hayes.

    Holden, feeling lonely and depressed as usual, calls his old girlfriend, Sally Hayes, in an attempt to set up a date. She agrees, and they go to a play together. Once the play is over, the two go to Radio City to ice skate. There, Holden reveals his plans of going West and leaving all of the phonies behind to Sally, and invites her on the adventure. She attempts to make him reconsider, and the date ends in an arguement between the two.
  • Holden's journey ends in tears.

    Once Holden dismisses his plans of going West and running away from all the phonies forever, he begins to cry out of pure happiness. In the rain, he watches as Phoebe, his little sister, spins around on the carousel. He accepts the fact that this is the way the world is.
  • Holden walks to Mr. Antolini's house.

    After sneaking out of his home, Holden walks to his old teacher's house. Once he arrives, Mr. Antolini and him talk about his future, since Antolini is quite concerned about it. He writes Holden down a part of a poem, and offers to let Holden stay the night. Holden does, but leaves quite early as he discovers Mr. Antolini petting him in his sleep.
  • Holden sneaks into his home.

    Once Holden sobers up after a bit of drinking with an old friend, he decides to return home to conversate with Phoebe, just for a bit. Once he successfully sneaks in, he wakes Phoebe and has a nice conversation with her. He even gives her his beloved red hunting hat. After his parents arrive, and he, once again, successfully avoids them, he sneaks back out into the world, heading to his old teacher's house.
