  • Estates General

  • National Assembly formed.

    Representatives from the third estate form the National Assembly. They stood for economic and social equality, and the abolishment of the 3 estates system.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    The National Assembly agreed to stay in the tennis court where they were meeting until a new constitution was established.
  • Storming the Bastille

    Armed citizens of Paris stormed and captured the Bastille.
  • Great Fear

    The Great Fear spreads throughout France. Peasants revolt against Louis XVI.
  • Feudalism

    France's system of social classes, feudalism, is abolished in 1789
  • March on Versailles

    Parisian women marched on Versailles demanding bread.
  • Nobility Abolished

    Titles such as Prince, Baron, etc. were no longer in use.
  • Constitution Accepted

    Louis XVI formally accepted the new constitution. The constitution was written by representatives of the Third Estate in the National Assembly.
  • Legislative Assembly

    In 1791, the Legislative Assembly was formed. This was the National Assembly's initiative for creating laws.
  • France declares war

    France declares war on Austria. The French army underestimated the size of the Austrian army, and fled on first sight of it.
  • Execution of Louis XVI

    Louis XVI is finally executed by means of the guillotine.
  • Death of Jean-Paul Marat

    Jean-Paul Marat, a radical French Jacobin, was assassinated while taking a medical bath.
  • Reign of Terror

    The Reign of Terror is led by Maximilien Robespierre, the dicator of France. A total of 40,000 were executed
  • Execution of Marie Antoinette

    Marie Antoinette, just months after her husband, was tried and executed by means of the guillotine.
  • Robspierre

    Robspierre becomes virtually a dictator in France. He leads the Reign of Terror.
  • Robspierre Executed

    Conventioned calls for the arrest of Robspierre. Robspierre attemps to create an uprising agains the government which fails, and he is executed. As a result, the terror is over.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte

    Napoleon took control of the French army in 1796, and by 1799, was the effective dictator of France.
