History Since 1865 Timeline

  • The Progressive Movement

    The Progressive Movement was a Political movement to try and advance social and political reform by trying to alter political corruption and industrialization.
  • World War I

    Countries in Europe had been fueling their armies and forming alliances. In turn, this led to a tense and hostile atmosphere. Finally, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led to the final straw declaring the war. WWI was between The Central Powers,Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey against the Allies, France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan. Later, in 1917, the United States joined. This was the first global war, making it super intense.
  • The New Deal

    The New Deal provided assistance for people without jobs and the impoverished, restoration of the economy to pre-crisis levels, and restructuring of the financial system to deter future depressions.
  • World War II

    WWII was sparked due to unresolved conflict from WWI along with economic instability. Other contributors were the invasion of Poland along with the attack on Pearl Harbor. With all of these combined, WWII began. This war was between the Axis powers, Germany, Italy, and Japan and the Allies, France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and, China. This war was so severe it is said to be bloodiest conflict in history as it divided the world down the middle.
  • Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War derived from the struggle for Vietnamese independence, the division between the North and the South drove the war leading to its explosion. The two sides: North Vietnam - The communist government of North Vietnam, Vietnamese Communist Party and supported by the Soviet Union, China, and communist allies.
    South Vietnam - The anti-communist government of South Vietnam, supported also by the United States and Western allies.
  • Bush Tax Cut

    The Bush tax cuts were a series of income tax reductions and other tax cuts implemented during George W. Bush's presidential term. These were implemented mainly to stimulate economic growth but they also provided financial relief for individuals. This boosted consumer spending leading to a positive economic reaction (Kruse and Zeilzer, 245).
  • 9/ 11 Attack

    On September 11, 2001, coordinated terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda were struck. Hijackers flew planes directly through the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Along with this, they flew planes through the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. Another plane later crashed in Pennsylvania. As a result of these attacks, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives (Naval History and Heritage Command).
  • Operation Enduring Freedom

    The goal was to apply sustained pressure within Afghanistan to take down both the Taliban government and the al-Qaeda terrorists. This was a big movement after the attacks of 9/11 (Naval History and Heritage Command).
  • The launch of the Department of Homeland Security

    The Department of Homeland Security centralizes and coordinates government operations while also preparing society for potential threats and events that may occur. This is just as important today as it was in 2002 when it was founded (Kruse and Zeilzer, 264).
  • Bush's compassionate conservative vision

    This was a philosophy that worked to try and blend conservative views and social compassion and inclusivity. Striving for better education, healthcare, and welfare programs for others and maintaining conservative values including limited government, personal responsibility, and faith based initiatives. This was important as it brought a sense of humanity to politics, fighting for everyone (Kruse and Zeilzer, 245).
