    During the years surrounding 1400 many improvements to ships were made. The improvements were mostly on tavagation tools such as the compass. Also some imporvements were made on the sails and the hulls of the ships.

    Prince Henry's School
    Prince Henry founds a shcool in 1418. His new shcool is all about teaching navigation. He teaches his students how to navigate themselves no matter where they are and how to just really steer your ship where you want it to go. So this shcool put out a new generation of navigators and explorers.

    Caravels were a completely different ship. They were designed with large hulls that could carry much more. they were primarily used as shipping boats but they were used for exporation sometimes. That because with a larger hull they could carry more supplies and therefore go farther without stopping

    On Bartholomue's travels he became the first european to reach the most souther tip of Africa. That is also known as the cape of good hope. It was named that by sailors. So now the europeans knew that they could reach the southern tip of Africa.

    In this year Columbus discovers the West Indies. This place would then latter become a large place of trade. The only thing that he failed to do was to see that this was not part of Asia. That it was a "new world".

    This treaty was very important to the Spanish and the Portugese. This treaty divided the world's undiscovered land between Spain and Portugal. That they would have equal lands to explore. So it was now fair and the dispute ended.

    Vasco de Gama
    Vasco de Gama is the first european to reach India by water. Not only that but he made a shipping route that went from Europe, past the Cape of Good Hope (southern tip of Africa), and then up into India. This then founded a major shippinf route between Europe and India that let them take over the spice trade in Europe.

    Columbus now finds the American continent. He is not the first person to find it but he is the first one to record his findings. But yet again he thought that the continent was Asia and did not realize that it was a new continent. But now people know that Europeans could reach a continent by travelling west.

    Cabot sails around and explores the land mass of greenland. Then he also goes into the Hudson Bay. That is in what we know now as Canada. He like Columbus also thinks that this is Asia. But he speculates that it might not be.

    Balboa is one of the worlds most famous explorers. He also was exploring the "new world". However he was the first European to cross the Isthmus of Pananma and sea the Pacific Ocean. He discovered the Pacific Ocean for Europe. So now they knew that there was another large body of water.

    In 1522 the last remaining of Magellans five ships returns to Spain. This marks the first voyage around the world. So now people know that it is possible to sail around the world. This the leads to the creation of new shipping routes.

    Giovanni Verrazano explores the coast of North America. This man was from France. He was exploring the coast in the name of France. He brings back what he finds and makes notes of rivers and other things. Now Europe knows more about the North American coast.

    Sir Francis Drake is another famous explorer. A big thing that he did was circumnavigate the globe. That was done before but he was the first Englishman to do so. So now Engalnd knows that world travel is possible.

    In 1607 the town of Jamestown is founded in what is now Virginia. This town was founded by England. Now England has a place on the "new world". That will set the stage for more exploration.

    I completely believe that these events sum up the great exploration era of the "new world". This time line starts out at the discovereing of the new world and goes to the exploration of it. Not only that it tells about all the little important details inbetween. That is why these events sum up th events of the great exploration era.
