    Claude Shannon layer out the basic guidelines for programming a chess- playing computer. He wrote the article "Programming a computer for playing chess." He and Alan Turing create chess programs that same year.

    The Raytheon company developed a computer simulation of global Cold War. Although it is sophisticated, it proves too complex for users unfamiliar with computers. Raytheon creates a more accessible version called "Grand Strategy."

    Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn develop an arcade table tennis game. When they test it out in a tavern, it stops working. People played it so much it jammed with quarters.

    A missing slice of pizza inspires Toru Iwatani to create pac-man. it goes on sale in July 1980. Pac-man for Atari 1600 becomes the first arcade hit to appear on a home console.

    Video game fans love Nintendo's Donkey Kong. it featured a character that would later emote world famous. Mario later becomes the star of a later game by Nintendo.

    Sony releases PlayStation in the U.S., selling for $100 less than Sega Saturn. this weakens Sega's home console business. When Sony PlayStation 2 comes out, it becomes the dominant home console.

    Will Write's The sims models teal life. It becomes the best-selling computer game ever. it was also the most popular game with female players.
  • Skylanders

    Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure becomes the first augmented reality hit. It lets players place plastic figures on a device that zaps characters into the game. Two years later Disney Infinity joins the rank of toy-video game hybrids.
  • Nintendo Switch

    Nintendo's switch introduces the first hybrid mobile/home video game console. it has removable features and allows two players at once. this system allows games like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey to be brought with them wherever they go.
