In 1665 Robert Hooke used a crude microscope to observe a thin slice of cork.The chambers he saw reminded him of the small room which monks lived in, so he named them cells. He was then first to use the word “cell” to describe the smallest units of life.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek was a Dutch merchant who experimented with the "Grinding of lenses" and because of that he was considered as “The Father of Microscopy”. The grinding of lenses help enlarge all image by nearly 300 times.
