    The first match began in the 11th century, in 1280 was the first account of a football being kicked. One of the opposite players was killed from running into a Dagger
  • First football club

    the first football club was called 'The gymnastic society' this was based in London as a sports club for football and wrestling. Matches took place on south side of the river thames
  • First referee

    the first referee was used in a match in Rochdale between two teams called Bodygurads and the fernaught club.
  • 90 Minute football match

    This rule was introduced in Lancashire, it was 45minutes per half which added up to 90minutes. This rule is still in place and used in todays games.
  • The FA

    The FA was formed in 1863, this is the governing body of football in the UK. this is the oldest assiciation in the world. The FA CUP was introduced in 1872

    The first match was between England and Scotland and this game finished a miserable 0-0 and was watched by 4.000 people

    Made up of two representatives from each of the four associations of the united kingdom the IFAB net for the first time on june 2 1886 to creat the offside rule.

    The spot kick was introduced by William McCrum from Co.Armagh if a foul was given inside the box a plently was award from 12 yards from the goal.

    Working class wages had risen which meant they could go on hoildays, this then abled people to watch matches on the afternoon, and this is how the 3 Oclock kick offs came from.

    in 1909 the shield was founded, this is the winner of the Premier league and the winner of the FA cup and is still being played today.

  • Public schools 1850 - 1900's

    Public schools began to appear at the beginning of 19th century, these public schools were important for the development of sport. Representatives from schools unis and clubs met up and decided rules and to introuduce them everywhere, this brought upper and lower class sport together. Football is and example of transformation as it brought upper and lower class together playing a sport with same rules and regulations. When boys left for UNIs they brought the sports with them.
  • Sports in the 1700's Agricultural society

    In agricultural times, sports were not as popular as they are in todays society. People was split into 3 different categories which was (Working class, Middle class and upper class) The working class did activites such as gambling, dog fighting and bare knuckle fighting they done this at market fairs or shows as well as playing mob football this shows how football became more popular. The upper class done real tennis, sailing and hunting. The skilled workers played bowls and billiards.
  • Pre-industrial revolution before 1780

    Almost all people lived and worked in the country. People’s work and social life mixed, as families lived on small plots of land, growing crops mostly for home consumption. Children learned to milk cows, churn butter, and tend to farm animals. Sport didnt change as much only the rich/upper class participated in some activities while peasents done work and tryed to rewared families with food
  • Rationalisation 1860 - 1870

    Up until the 1860s workers had relied on their public houses for entertainment, which were often socially destructive. rational recreations were brought in by various groups such as christians and other middle class groups. thus societies such as the boys brigade and young mens christian association developed and improved facilities to persaude people to take part postivily and bring races and cultures together.
  • Codification 1860 - 1870

    A major milestone in the ongoing efforts to codify the game was the formation of the Football Association in 1863. The first set of rules was similar to the Cambridge Rules and the Sheffield Rules. 1) Maximum length of the playing field. 2) a toss of coin to see who recives kick off. 3) a goal shall be won when ball cross the ling between the posts. This is some of the rules that has made the game what it is today and how it has brought race together.
  • Influence of war 1931

    during the wars it had a massive impact on sports becuase when they played sport it was helping them get ready for the wars, for example playing, golf, cricket, fencing and tennis this would all help the gear up for the war and have them ready for what was going to happen.
  • Twentieth century sports, end of 1900s

    The develoment of sport started to spirl from 1890s onwards and we know this because there is now written documents to show. When the young boys went on to Universities they played an important role in the development of sports. they were able to bring together different strands and develop national sports, they also would have wrote out rules for various sports and set up governing bodies to oversee sports.
  • Industrial revolution 1780 - 1850

    The upper class was not effected by the IR. The middle class followed in the steps of the upper class and was not greatly effected. The IR had a great impact on the working class due to the long working hours, the workers had very little activity time and if they did the men would go as they handled the money. The new increase of work hours only left workers time to eat and sleep.10 hour work was introduced in 1847 this raised more money which meant more time &new sports.Horse racing and Cricket
