History of Special Education

  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    This case was made because it was unconsitiutional for education insitutions to segregate children by race. This is legal landmark by ruling would have reaching the special education area.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Act was made for equal access to equcation for all students. Federal funding for both primary and secondary education for students that are disadvantaged by poverty.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    This case called for students with disabilities to be placed in publicly funded school settings that met their incdividual educational needs.This is based on a proper and through evalution.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    This case made is unlawful for the Board of Education to deny individual access to publicly funded educational opportunities.
  • Congressional Investigation of 1972

    Congress set out to uncover how many children education needs were being underserved. It showed that 3.9 million out 8 million the needs were met and the others were not.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This law was passed by President Gerald Ford. This law required all states that accepted money from the federal government were required to provide equal access to equcation for children with disabliities.
  • Public Law 99-457

    This law was made to amend all handicapped children act, which mandated that individual states provides services to families of children born with disbilities from the time they were born. These are not available to the child until they reach the age of three.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    This act was signed by President Reagan. This law gave parents of children with disailities more say in the development of their child's individual education plan.
