    First Public School for Disabilities
    In 1760 Charles Michel L' Epee founded the first public school for people with disabilities in France. This public school focused more on language and phonetics being taught in different ways.   • Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles

    Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles
    In 1784, Valentin Haüy followed in Charles Michel L’Epeé footsteps with recognizing the importance of special education. Valentin started the first school just for blind people in the world. Valentin idea for this school was heavily inspired by Charles and others. They helped him develop methods to use in his school for blind students.

    Worldwide Schools
    In 1851 many schools for special education started opening up world wide. States started opening institutions that aim to educate disabled children. With the importance of special education schools becoming known among the nation many laws and rights started being put in place for these facilities and children.

    Legal Changes for Special Education Schools
    In 1876 the importance of special education schools was becoming more known. In 1876 the Association of Medical Officers of American Institutions for Idiotic and Feebleminded Persons was found. With these associations in place it became the states’ responsibility to provide institutions for the special children.

    In 1897 the Department of Special Education was created. This Department of Special Education allowed people with disabilities to have their rights to education guaranteed. Many schools started training programs for teachers to become and get trained on how to be a special education teachers.

    This intelligence scale was a standardized intelligence test in order to identify mentally retarded children. In America many different test are used. Simon-Binet scale to Stanford-Binet scale. These scales allowed students who may have not know they needed assistance to be given the option of using these laws in place to protect those with disabilities.

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    In 1965, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was passed. This Act was important in the history of special education because it provided funds for schools. These funds allowed the schools to have the the proper environment needed for children with disabilities.
  • Rehabilitation Act

    Rehabilitation Act
    In 1973, society started to become overwhelmed with ideas to protect children with disabilities and their education. The Rehabilitation Act was passed and was put in place to re-assure the rights of people with disabilities in respect to a non-discriminative environment in education, employment, and housing. This Act protected people from discrimination if they were special needs.

  • Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 94-142
    This law also known currently as IDEA(Individual with Disabilities Education Act) guarantees people with disabilities have rights. Their rights include free and appropriate public education. Also, it states that this free and appropriate public education should be in a least restrictive environment.
  • American with Disabilities Act

    American with Disabilities Act
    In 1990, this act the American with Disabilities Act was passed. This act guaranteed that implementation would be made to people with disabilities in the work environment, as well as in public transportation, and telecommunications. This act allowed people with disabilities to be able to have the resources they needed to go to work and school and be successful in life without discrimination.
