    The American School for the Deaf was founded in 1817, in Hartford, Connecticut. This school was the very first school for children with disabilities in the Western Hemisphere.     Law Mandating Compulsory Education
    Rhode Island passed a law mandating compulsory education for all children. Compulsory education is education in which children are required by law to receive and for governments to provide. The law require children to attend a public or private school for a certain period of time.

    Association of Instructors of the Blind schools offer comprehensive educational programs for the visually impaired students. This was the first organization of blindness professionals in America.

    The requirement in federal law that students with disabilities receive their education to the maximum extent appropriate with non-disabled students. The special education students are not removed from regular classes.

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act is a federal law. It’s also know as Public Law 94-142. It requires public schools to provide appropriate educational services for all children with disabilities between ages 3 and 21. Supplemental services, due process and less restrictive environment.

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    President George W. Bush signed American with Disabilities Act. The act promises people with special needs will have the same rights as everybody else. This goes for both school and work. The act also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, workplaces and everyday society such as public places and transportation.

    IDEA Reauthorized
    The IDEA Reauthorized is an updated version of the original one. It made many changes. The changes include the IEP, due process and the student discipline. It preserves the basic structure and civil rights guarantees of IDEA but also makes significant changes in the law.
